Field of ApplicationPurely mineral based coating for internal walls and ceilings, made of slaked lime, marble dust and water. Calcino Decor is particularly suitable for high-grade designing of impressive interiors, such as representative offices, receptions and conference room areas, hotels, banks, leisure rooms, chancelleries, private buildings, etc.
- Purely mineral based.
- No organic additives.
- Looks like stone.
- Highly diffusion-capable, high sorption.
- Non-combustible, hence mineral.
- Easy to apply (ductile).
- Tintable on site in individual colours.
12 kg plastic bucket
- Calcino Decor:
Whitish grey. Colour and consistency of delivered product may vary marginally, due to the pure mineral contents.
- Calcino Color:
22 basic colours: Subdivided in 4 finished paste units to obtain 4 lightness steps (each unit).
- Tinting of Calcino Decor should be effected min. 3 days before applying. The viscosity is reduced by the mixing procedure and the product is applicable after approx. 2 days, at the earliest.
- Very important: Pour Calcino Decor in a clean vessel, directly after having tinted, to avoid impurities with dried material that may arise from the sides/seams or container base.
- The basic colours have been developed according to the Caparol 3D System, but they cannot match the colours of Caparol 3D colour fan exactly, due to the fluctuation range of natural products.
Further details for tinting Calcino Decor: Please see Technical Information No. 903.
StorageKeep in a cool, but frost-free place. Do not store below 5 °C. Keep partially used buckets/containers always tightly closed (hermetically sealed), thus avoiding agglutination and initial drying.

Suitable SubstratesThe substrate must be sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.
Substrate PreparationThoroughly dry/hardened Calcino Decor is non-elastic and may tend to cracking fissuration on unstable substrates. Therefore the substrates always must be stabilised by suitable means.
Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PI (Lime Plaster), PII (Lime-Cement Mortar) and
PIII (Cement Mortar):
Coat solid, normally absorbent surfaces without any pre-treatment.
Apply one priming coat of OptiGrund or CapaSol on slightly sanding, absorbent substrates.
Prime more/highly sanding surfaces with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB or AmphiSilan-Putzfestiger.
Gypsum Mortars and Ready-Mixed Gypsum Plasters in Mortar Group PIV:
Sand/grind off sintered skin, remove all abrasive dust and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB or AmphiSilan-Putzfestiger.
Gypsum Building Boards/Wallboards:
Prime absorbent boards with OptiGrund or Caparol-Tiefgrund TB
(for sheeting see also "Gypsum Plasterboards").
Gypsum Plasterboards (Sandwich-Type Plaster Boards/Drywalls):
Sand/grind down all filler/mortar burrs. Strengthen soft and sanded gypsum areas (repair patches) with CapaSol. Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Tiefgrund TB or AmphiSilan Putzfestiger on surfaces with a higher absorbency.
Boards containing water-soluble, discolouring substances that leave marks must be primed with Caparol-Filtergrund grob (coarse). In Germany: Follow BFS Data Sheet No. 12, part 2.
Double covering (planking/sheeting) is required, when coating with Calcino Decor, to avoid crack formation on joint areas and connection joints. These joints must be closed in such a way that a durable, crack-free covering is guaranteed.
Remove formwork oil residues and chalking or sanding substances.
Coat matt, slightly absorbent coatings directly with Putzgrund. Roughen (sand) glossy/shiny surfaces and enamel coatings.
Unstable Existing Coatings:
Remove unstable coatings of enamel, dispersion/emulsion paint or synthetic (organic) plaster.
Prime highly porous, sanding or absorbent surfaces with OptiGrund or CapaSol.
Remove unstable coats of mineral paint by mechanical means and remove all abrasive dust.
Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Tiefgrund TB or AmphiSilan-Putzfestiger.
Coats of Glue-Bound Distemper:
Carefully wash off and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB or AmphiSilan-Putzfestiger.
Woodchip/Ingrain, Relief or Embossed Wallpapers (made of Paper),
Remove completely. Wash off all residues of wallpaper paste (glue) and waste paper. Prime the substrate with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB or AmphiSilan-Putzfestiger.
Surfaces Stained with Nicotine, Water, Soot or Fat/Grease:
Remove nicotine, soot or fat/grease stains by washing with tap water, adding a fat-dissolving household detergent, then allow the substrate to dry well.
Clean dried-up water stains by dry brushing-off. Apply one insulating coat of Caparol-Filtergrund grob (coarse). Follow Technical Information No. 845.
Wood and Derived Timber Products:
Wooden substrates/panels and boards of derived timber products cannot be coated with Calcino Decor due to their swelling and shrinking behaviour.
After having completed the necessary preparations, repair defects with Caparol-Akkordspachtel in accordance with our processing specification and, if necessary, prime subsequently.
Existing, Stable Lime Filler (Surface Treatment) Techniques without a Coat of Wax:
Remove (sand/grind off) sintered skin and remove all abrasive dust. Then apply one priming coat of Putzgrund 610.
Existing Lime Filler (Surface Treatment) Techniques with a Coat of Wax:
Please request for technical advice. Please Note:
Careful and durable substrate preparation is a basic requirement for Calcino Decor application. In order to avoid fissuring on joints and connection joints, all these joints must be treated in such a way that a long-lasting, crack-free covering is guaranteed.
Method of Application
Smoothen uneven or unevely textured substrates previously with Akkordspachtel mittel/medium or fein/fine type. If cracks still exist in plaster coatings, a reinforcement fleece should be embedded in Akkordspachtel.
Structural cracks can be subjected to extreme movements. Hence a durable and invisible crack covering/bridging by painting technique is impossible. Calcino Decor is applicable when the priming coat is thoroughly dry. Three working phases, consisting of multiple procedures, are needed to achieve the final surface finishing effect:
- Edge protective strips (profiles) made of metal can lead to visible discolouration (darkening) or marks due to corrosion in the finished filler technique. These areas should be prepared by suitable means before applying Calcino Decor.
- If liquid/serum forms on the surface (within the bucket), do not pour off, but mix the material very carefully using low-speed paddle mixer to achieve a homogeneous product.
- Keep tools always clean and use them carefully.
- Clean the seam of containers regularly. Dried material should not be allowed to fall into the material being used.
- Always cover the material surfaces with a plastic sheet during breaks.
- Calcino Decor, Color and Imprägnierpaste (impregnating paste) must always be applied without any dilution.
- The tinting of material for working phases 2 and 3 must be effected minimum 3 days before application!
Stir the required colour paste(s) in the original container and then add to the lime surfacer (spackling compound) without thinning/dilution. This mixture should be stirred with a low-speed paddle mixer (stirring staff must not be sharp-edged). Pour the mixture into another clean, empty vessel/container and stir again to achieve homogeneous dispersion of pigments.
After a soaking period of approx. 3 days, the tinted material should neither be stirred nor diluted.
After having completed all eventually necessary substrate preparation, always apply one intermediate coat of Putzgrund 610.
Working Phase 1:
One full surface trowel application of approx. 1,000 g/m2 white Calcino Decor is necessary to guarantee complete covering of the substrate (primed with Putzgrund 610). Handle the trowel carefully, avoiding any scratching noises. For this purpose the use of a medium sized scraper (240 mm x 100 mm) is suggested. Apply the lime-surfacer in delivered consistency without thinning/dilution.
This coat must be allowed to dry for at least 24 hours, thus avoiding flaking in subsequent work steps. Cooler and moist weather conditions extend the drying time. Short and slight trowel strokes are favoured and not hindering for further coatings, but the forming of severe filler burrs must be avoided.
Sanding has to be avoided in this phase as well as in all subsequent work phases. On the one hand a certain layer thickness is required for successful application and otherwise fine dust particles could lead to low adhesion or crack formation. Exception: Outer edges are liberally filler treated with Calcino Decor and (after thorough drying) corrected with abrasive paper.
Working Phase 2:
This phase includes filling of trowel marks caused by the first working phase. To avoid a premature drying of the product, apply a first (very) thin coat, and then, after having respected a short waiting time, apply a second coat.
Application of material is done with approx. 300 g/m2 of Calcino Decor, already tinted with Calcino Color pastes/tinters in the desired colour shade. For this purpose a medium sized scraper (240 mm x 100 mm) should be used.
Drying time of applied material in this working phase: approx. 2 - 3 hours.
Working Phase 3:
In the last working phase a material application of approx. 100 g/m2 is essential to improve/finish the surface. The product is also applied in two thin coats with a medium sized scraper (240 mm x
100 mm). After a gap of approx. 5 minutes compress and smoothen with a small scraper (200 mm x 80 mm) or narrow scraper (200 mm x 50 mm).
Both these scrapers are only to be used for this operation and should be undamaged. This work step has to be done very carefully/sensitive and without much pressure, avoiding any flaking of lime material.
Allow the surface to harden for 3 to 6 daysfor a proper carbonisation of lime (do not apply an impregnation).Discolouration may occur with premature treatment.Apply an even, thin coat of impregnation paste Calcino-Imprägnierpaste (T.I. No. 905) with a non-scouring Venetian trowel or use a soft, non-fuzzing cloth/tissue.Do not apply more than 30 to 40 g/m2.Allow to flash off for a short time and remove excess material with a soft cloth.Allow to dry, then wipe again. The application of excess material may cause a slight whitish fogging effect (surplus of pumice dust) which cannot be objected. Wipe off again to reduce this effect.
ConsumptionFor 3 working phases:
Approx. 1,500 g/m2, depending on the substrate and application procedure.
Determine the exact amount of material required by coating a test area on site.
Application ConditionsLower Temperature Limit for Application/Drying: + 10 °C for product, ambient air and substrate.
ToolsTrowel set (Venetian smoothing trowels) with rounded edges. For each operation another trowel should be used to avoid marks. Damaged tools lead to visible striations on the surface. Sand new tools with 400 - 600 grain sandpaper to make them usable.
Tool CleaningClean tools immediately after use with tap water.
Only clean tools should be used for application.
Cleaning and MaintenanceCalcino-Imprägnierpaste (impregnating paste) does not protect against direct spray/splashing water loads (limescale formation is possible) or soiling caused by substances with content of fat/grease, acids, tar, caffeine, theine or discolouring substances that leave marks.
Slight surface soiling is directly removable with warm water, adding a neutral household detergent, if necessary. Note: Do not use descalers (water demineralizers / household cleaners with content of antiliming agent).
Special Risks (Hazard Note) / Safety Advice (Status as at Date of Publication)Causes serious eye damage. Causes skin irritation. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Use personal protective equipment. IF SWALLOWED: rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Get medical advice/attention.
DisposalMaterials and all related packaging must be disposed of in a safe way in accordance with the full requirements of the local authorities. Particular attention should be made to removing wastage from site in compliance with standard construction site procedures.
In Germany: Only completely emptied buckets/containers should be handed in for recycling or waste removal to an approved waste management plant. Landfilling of hardened product is possible in compliance with the local official regulations.
Substances of Content - DeclarationCalcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, water
