The drip-resistant thin-film glaze

Field of Application

Drip-resistant, water-based thin-film glaze for exterior wood components.
Suitable for use on wood components with limited dimensional stability and non-dimensionally stable wood components, such as:

Facade cladding
Pergolas
Carports
Garden fences

Do not use for wood in constant contact with soil or water and for wood that may come into contact with unpackaged food or animal feed. Do not use in living and recreation rooms. Not suitable for horizontal surfaces (e.g. terrace floors).

Colours

All colours according to the CapaWood Classic colour chart and other colours can be tinted via ColorExpress. The colours on the CapaWood colour charts and various colour samples are for reference only. If in doubt, carry out a test coating. The colour of the substrate and the amount applied influence the colour shade. Only dilute colours with max. 10% colourless, otherwise UV protection will be reduced.

The gloss level may vary depending on the wood surface, consumption and the wood to be coated.

Storage

Store in a cool, sealed container.
Protect from frost and high temperatures.

Originally closed container at least 2 years storage-stable.

Suitable Substrates

Max. 18% wood moisture content for components with limited dimensional stability and nondimensionally stable components in accordance with BFS-Fachregeln Nr. 18.

Substrate Preparation

The wooden surfaces must be cleaned of dust, dirt, resin pockets, grease, oil, etc. before coating. Thoroughly brush off any sanding dust or loose residues from old coatings. Silicone residues can cause flow problems.

Load-bearing wooden components	Must be impregnated in advance with CapaWood Protect Primer.
New wooden components	Thoroughly clean smooth and planed wood surfaces. Remove any wood constituents that may be seeping out, such as resins and resin pockets. Sand in the direction of the grain if necessary.
Maintenance of an existing structure with CapaWood Aqua HolzGel	Sand down the load-bearing coating and clean thoroughly.

Method of Application

Stir before use only if the material has separated, as otherwise the drip resistance will be reduced. If stirred, the drip resistance will re-establish itself after a few hours.
Use undiluted and do not mix with other products.

New wood	Apply at least two coats of undiluted paint to new wood. Apply the first coat to all sides.
Maintenance coats	apply 1–2 coats of undiluted paint. Sand between coats after the first coat, only if absolutely necessary. Do not inhale sanding dust. Then apply 1–2 more coats of undiluted paint.

Consumption

Brush application on smooth wood surfaces:
Approx. 45 – 65 ml/m²

Brush application on rough-sawn wood surfaces:
Approx. 90 – 120 ml/m²

The condition of the substrate and the moisture content of the wood influence consumption and colour tone. Exact consumption values can only be determined by applying a test coat beforehand.

Application Conditions

Material, ambient air and substrate temperature: min. 5 °C (ideal range: 10 to 25 °C)
Relative humidity: ≤ 80 %

Drying/Drying Time

At 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity:

Touch dry: approx. 0,5 h
Recoatable: approx. 1 h
Rainproof: approx. 12 h

Drying times are highly dependent on the application quantity and drying conditions. Drying is delayed at lower temperatures and higher humidity or low air exchange, e.g. due to dense storage of components on rack trolleys.

Tools

Brushes with plastic bristle mixtures are best suited for the job. Suitable brushes include M-Plus Flat Brush Glaze Plus, Mesko M4 or comparable brush types.

Tool Cleaning

After use, clean with water and, if necessary, a wetting agent (detergent) and dispose of in accordance with the safety data sheet. Wearing nitrile gloves is recommended.

Note

Dense wood types such as larch and tropical woods are not suitable for water-based wood coatings in outdoor areas; spruce, fir, and pine wood are preferable. With the exception of CapaWood Aqua TopOil and CapaWood Aqua TopOil Pure, water-based coatings should be avoided on dense wood types. If the wood species for outdoor coating is unknown, a solvent-based product is recommended. Observe BFS-Fachregeln Nr. 18!

Raw wood used outdoors should be coated immediately before it is exposed to the weather (UV radiation, precipitation, wind). Otherwise, reduced paint adhesion caused by the formation of a separating layer is to be expected. The extent of the problem caused by this separating layer cannot be determined using standard construction site tests.

Extending the durability of coated wooden façades:

Any shortcomings in structural wood protection cannot be compensated for by coating.
The use of rift-cut and semi-rift-cut boards is strongly recommended for facade surfaces that are exposed to severe weathering, as weathering causes the top layers of wood on the surface of flat-cut boards to peel off, resulting in extensive damage to the coating.
Vertically mounted facade formwork is preferable to horizontal formwork.
For façade cladding, rough-sawn surfaces are preferable to planed surfaces.

Disposal

Materials and all related packaging must be disposed of in a safe way in accordance with the full requirements of the local, regional, national and international authorities. Washing water must not be discharged into the sewage system or the environment.
