Silicate emulsion paint for facades as per German standard
VOB/C DIN 18363, section 2.4.1.; double silicifying.

Field of Application

Histolith^® Außenquarz is suitable for highly weather-resistant, non-fading facade coatings with advantageous physical properties.

Material Properties

Non-fading mineral pigmentation.
High rain protection, water-repellent w-value = 0.07 kg/m²√h
Maximum water vapour permeability sd-value <0.01 m
Highly permeable to carbon dioxide.
Contains quartziferous, silicifiable additives, hence double-silicifying.
Reaction to fire: Non-combustible according to German standard DIN 4102.
Wash and scrub resistant.

Potassium silicate, non-fading mineral pigments, mineral fillers, acrylic resin (< 5 %).

Deliverable ready tinted in many colours ex factory, on request. Histolith^® Außenquarz can be tinted with Histolith Volltonfarben SI and is tintable via the ColorExpress tinting & mixing machine system using inorganic colourants (colour pastes).
Only use product of same batch for finishing coat on seamless surfaces or, when paint of different batches must be applied, mix the entire quantity needed in advance.

Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.

Substrate Preparation

New Renders/Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PIc (Hydraulic Lime Plaster),
PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars):
Curing times of new renders/plasters have to be observed before coating (normally min. 7 days
at 20 °C and 65 % RH).
Remove sintered skin with Histolith^® Fluat.

Uncoated Existing Renders/Plasters and Coats of Mineral Paint:
Clean the surface thoroughly and remove all layers of low adherence. Apply one priming coat of Histolith^® Silikat-Fixativ, diluted in ratio of 2:1 to 1:1 with tap (potable) water, depending on substrate absorbency. Apply one intermediate coat of Histolith^® Mineralin on highly repaired surfaces with slight shrinkage cracks and on existing spray/scratch render/plaster coatings.

Sound/Stable Existing Coats of Matt (Flat) Dispersion/Emulsion Paint:
Clean the surface thoroughly. Apply one priming coat of Histolith^® Quarzgrund, thinned to a max. of 5 % with Histolith^® Silikat-Fixativ.

Render/Plaster Repairs:
Repair mortars should match the existing render/plaster in type and texture and must be allowed to set and harden thoroughly before being painted. Treat all repairs with Histolith^® Fluat and rinse with tap (potable) water.

Brickwork / Brick Masonry:
Only brickwork made of absorbent bricks is suitable. Hard-burned bricks and clinkers are unsuitable. Always check for compatibility by coating a test area on site. Carefully clean the surface. Touch up damaged mortar joints. Apply one priming coat of Histolith^® Silikat-Fixativ, diluted in ratio of 2:1 to 1:1 with tap (potable) water, depending on substrate absorbency. Apply one intermediate coat of Histolith^® Quarzgrund.

Natural Stones:
Only absorbent natural stones are suitable substrates. Always check for compatibility by coating a test area on site. Clean the surface thoroughly and remove all layers of low adherence. Strengthen sanding natural stones with stone sealer Histolith^® Steinfestiger.

Note:
Natural stones with water-soluble substances of content may show efflorescence on the paint coat and visible stains may occur.

Surfaces with Fungal and Algal Attack:
Wash off the fungal (fungi/mildew/mould) or algal attack. Allow the surface to dry, then use Histolith^® Algenentferner (algae remover) and allow to dry. Prior consultation with our technical assistance is needed to achieve the correct surface coating system.

Method of Application

Apply the product on listed (landmarked) buildings/monuments preferably by paint brush.

Surface Coating System

Slightly and Evenly Absorbent Mineral Substrates:
Apply one priming coat with a mixture of 2 parts by volume of Histolith^® Außenquarz and 1 part by volume of Histolith^® Silikat-Fixativ (Silicate Fixative).
Apply one finishing coat of Histolith^® Außenquarz, thinned to a max. of 5 % with Histolith^® Silikat-Fixativ.

Strongly and Unevenly Absorbent or Sanding Mineral Substrates:
Apply one priming coat of Histolith^® Silikat-Fixativ (Silicate Fixative), diluted in ratio of 2:1 to 1:1 with tap (potable) water, depending on substrate absorbency.
Apply one intermediate and one finishing coat of Histolith^® Außenquarz, thinned to a max. of 5 % with Histolith^® Silikat-Fixativ.
Advisable for repaired render/plaster surfaces: Use Histolith^® Quarzgrund or Histolith^® Mineralin for intermediate coat.

Consumption

Approx. 250 - 300 ml/m² for two coats on smooth substrates. On roughly textured surfaces correspondingly more. Determine the exact amount of material required by coating a test area on site.

Application Conditions

Low Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+8 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.

Drying/Drying Time

At +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity surface-dry and recoatable after 12 hours.
Rain resistant after approx. 24 hours.
Lower temperatures and higher humidity extend the drying time.

Tool Cleaning

Clean tools/equipment immediately after use with water.

Note

To avoid lapping, the material should be applied wet-on-wet and without interruption. Do not apply on horizontal or inclined surfaces exposed to rain or moisture.
Do not apply on sun heated substrates, during high temperatures, strong wind, extremely high relative humidity, fog or rain, or imminent rain and frost. Night frost must be avoided.
Protect the facade with suitable scaffolding-nets or tarpaulins, if necessary.
Copper ions in draining rain water (run-off water) may react with ingredients of Histolith^® Außenquarz and may cause discolouration. Thus all relevant copper surfaces must be protected against oxidation or any contact of draining water with coated facades/surfaces must be avoided.

Protective Measures:
The areas adjoining the surface to be painted should be carefully masked, in particular glass, ceramics, enamel/varnish coatings, clinkers, natural stone, metals and wood.

Keep out of reach from children. Use P2 dust filter for grinding. Ensure good ventilation during use and drying. Do not eat, drink or smoke while using the product. In case of contact with eyes or skin, immediately and thoroughly rinse with water. Do not allow product to enter drains, waterways or soil. Clean utensils immediately after use with soap and water.
Due to its potassium silicate content, the reaction of silicate based coatings is highly alkaline. Hence protect skin and eyes from paint. The areas adjoining the surface to be coated must be carefully masked, in particular glass, ceramics, enamel/varnish coating, clinkers, natural stones, wood and metals. Wash splashes immediately and completely with plenty of clean water. Do not breathe spray dust.

Disposal

Materials and all related packaging must be disposed of in a safe way in accordance with the full requirements of the local authorities. Particular attention should be made to removing wastage from site in compliance with standard construction site procedures.
In Germany: Only completely empty containers should be handed in for recycling. Dispose containers with residues of liquid product via waste collection point accepting old paints and enamels. Dispose dried/hardened product residues as construction site/demolition/municipal or domestic waste.

EU limit value for the VOC content

of this product (category A/c): 40 g/l (2010). This product contains max. 10 g/l VOC.
