Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be solid, sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.

Substrate Preparation

Exterior Substrates

New Renders/Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PI (Hydraulic Lime Plasters),
PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars):
New renders/plasters must be left untreated for a sufficiently long time, minimum 4 weeks for mortar
group PI and minimum 2 weeks for mortar groups PII and PIII. Remove sintered layers/skin with
Histolith® Fluat. Apply one priming coat of Histolith® Quarzgrund.

Untreated Existing Renders/Plasters (Mortar Groups as mentioned above) and Mineral Paints:
Carefully clean the surface. Remove all layers of low adherence. Apply one priming coat of Histolith®
Silikat-Fixativ, thinned in ratio of 2:1 to 1:1 with tap (potable) water depending on substrate
absorbency. Apply one intermediate coat of Histolith® Quarzgrund.

Sound Existing Coats of Matt Dispersion/Emulsion Paint:
Carefully clean the surface. Apply one priming coat of Histolith® Quarzgrund, thinned up to a max. of 10 % with Histolith® Silikat-Fixativ.

Interior Substrates

New Renders/Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PI (Hydraulic Lime Plaster),
PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars):
Leave to stand for 2-4 weeks. Remove sintered skin with Histolith® Fluat.
Apply one priming coat of Histolith® Strukturgrund.

Gypsum Renders/Plasters in Mortar Group/Class PIV
(Gypsum Mortar and Ready-Mixed Gypsum Render/Plaster):
On sound, firm renders/plasters apply one priming coat of Histolith® Weißgrund (interior primer).
Strengthen soft gypsum plasters with special primer Histolith® Spezialgrundierung.
Sand gypsum plasters with sintered skin, then remove sanding dust and apply one priming coat of
Histolith® Spezialgrundierung.
In each case: Allow to fully dry, then apply an intermediate coat of Histolith® Strukturgrund.

Gypsum Plasterboards (Sandwich Type Plaster Boards):
Sand down filling burrs. Prime with Histolith® Strukturgrund. Strengthen soft filled gypsum patches with
Histolith® Spezialgrundierung. For boards with watersoluble content that leaves marks, apply one priming coat of Caparol Aqua-Sperrgrund.
In Germany: Follow BFS Data Sheet No. 12.
In each case: Allow to fully dry, then apply an intermediate coat of Histolith® Strukturgrund.

Gypsum Wallboards:
Apply one priming coat of Histolith® Weißgrund. Apply one intermediate coat of Histolith® Strukturgrund.

Coats of Glue-Bound Distemper:
Wash off (remove) thoroughly. Prime with Histolith® Spezialgrundierung.
Allow to dry thoroughly, then apply one intermediate coat of Histolith® Strukturgrund.

Preparation of Material

Carefully stir up the product before applying. Thin up to max. 2 % with Histolith® Silikat-Fixativ, if necessary to adjust the application consistency.

Method of Application

Apply with stainless steel trowel and texture without delay using suitable texturing tools.

Consumption

2–3 kg/m2, depending on the desired texture.

Application Conditions

Lower Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+8 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.

Drying/Drying Time

At +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity surface-dry and paintable after 12 hours. Rain resistant after
24 hours. Lower temperatures and higher humidity extend the drying time.

Tool Cleaning

Clean tools/equipment immediately after use with water.

Note

Always apply the product wet-on-wet in order to avoid lapping (overlap marks).
Do not apply on horizontal or inclined surfaces exposed to rain or moisture. For chemical drying (setting) of silicate products some moisture is needed.
Prevent premature evaporation of water during application and drying, e.g. caused by high temperature of ambient air or sun heated substrate, strong wind or low relative humidity, but also extremely high RH (fog) must be avoided.

The product must be allowed to fully dry and set, otherwise chalking effect may occur or the sodium silicate (silicate/water/soluble glass) cannot fully harden and remains water soluble. In that case showers/rainfalls are able to wash away the silicate glass which leads among others to an etching effect on contact surfaces, e.g. glass, metals or enamel coated substrates.
Night frost must be avoided.

Protective Measures:
The areas adjoining the surface to be painted should be carefully masked, in particular glass,
ceramics, enamel/varnish coatings, clinkers, natural stone, metals and wood.

Please Note (Status as at Date of Publication)

Keep out of reach from children. Use P2 dust filter for grinding. Ensure good ventilation during use and drying. Do not eat, drink or smoke while using the paint. In case of contact with eyes or skin, immediately and thoroughly rinse with water. Do not allow product to enter drains, waterways or soil. Clean utensils immediately after use with soap and water.Due to its potassium silicate content, the reaction of silicate based coatings is highly alkaline. Hence protect skin and eyes from paint. The areas adjoining the surface to be coated must be carefully masked, in particular glass, ceramics, enamel/varnish coating, clinkers, natural stones, wood and metals. Wash splashes immediately and completely with plenty of clean water.

Further information: See Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Disposal

Materials and all related packaging must be disposed of in a safe way in accordance with the full requirements of the local authorities. Particular attention should be made to removing wastage from site in compliance with standard construction site procedures.
In Germany: Only completely emptied buckets/containers must be given for recycling. Dispose containers with residues of liquid product via waste collection point accepting old paints and enamels. Dispose dried/hardened product residues as construction site/demolition/municipal or domestic waste.
