    Note:
Due to the deficiencies of the printing process, slight differences in shades may occur if compared with the original colour shades. Absorbency and nature of substrates as well as the environment and lighting conditions may influence the gloss level and the shade.

    Gloss Level

    Silk-matt/semi-gloss (mid sheen)

    Storage

Keep in a cool, but frost-free place. Keep partially used containers tightly closed.

    Density

    Approx. 1.2 - 1.3 g/cm3

    Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, paragraph 3.

    Substrate Preparation

    Exterior Surfaces

Renders/Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars)/Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 998-1: 1.5 N/mm2:
New renders/plasters must be left untreated for a sufficiently long time, normally for 2 weeks at 20 °C and 65 % relative humidity. Adverse weather conditions, influenced e.g. by wind or rain, extend the curing process and correspondingly longer idle times must be respected. The risk of calcareous efflorescence is reduced by an additional priming coat of CapaGrund Universal and the alkaline finishing render/plaster may be coated after a delay of 7 days.

Existing renders/plasters: Repairs must have adequate time to cure and dry. Highly porous, absorbent, slightly sanding renders/plasters: Apply one priming coat of OptiGrund E.L.F. Prime highly sanding, chalking renders/plasters with Dupa-grund. Coat mineral lightweight renders/plasters of mortar group PII with Sylitol or AmphiSilan products.

Concrete: Concrete surfaces with dirt deposits or fines/sintered layer must be cleaned mechanically or with high pressure jet, in compliance with the regulations. Apply one priming coat of CapaGrund Universal on slightly absorbent or even surfaces. Apply one priming coat of OptiGrund E.L.F. on highly porous, slightly sanding or absorbent surfaces. Prime chalking surfaces with Dupa-grund.

Cement-Bound Wood Chipboards (Particle Boards): Due to the high alkalinity of cement-bound wood chipboards (particle boards) one priming coat of Disbon 481 EP-Uniprimer must be applied, to prevent the forming of calcareous efflorescence.

Facing/Fairfaced Brickwork (Unrendered Masonry): Only absorbent clinker bricks of frost resistant quality and free of foreign inclusions are suitable for exterior coatings. Masonry must be dry and free of salts/salty efflorescence, jointing must be free of cracks. Apply one priming coat of Dupa-grund. If brown discolouration appears on the intermediate coat, then recoat with solvent-based façade paint Duparol.

Sound/Stable Coatings of Enamel/Varnish or Emulsion Paint: Roughen the surface of glossy/shiny coatings. Clean existing soiled, chalking paint coats by high pressure water jet, in compliance with the regulations. Apply one priming coat of CapaGrund Universal. Prime with Dupa-grund, when other cleaning methods are used (washing, wire brushing, hosing with water).

Sound/Stable Synthetic Resin-Bound (Organic) Renders/Plasters: Clean existing renders/plasters by suitable means. Allow wet cleaned surfaces to dry thoroughly before any further treatment. Apply one priming coat of CapaGrund Universal. Coat new renders without pre-treatment.

Sound/Stable Existing Silicate Paints and Renders/Plasters: Coat with Sylitol or AmphiSilan products.

Unsound Mineral Coatings: Remove the coating completely by sanding off, brushing off, scraping off, using high pressure water jet in compliance with the regulations, or by other suitable means. Allow wet cleaned surfaces to dry thoroughly before further treatment. Prime with Dupa-grund.

Unsound Coatings of Enamel, Dispersion/Emulsion Paint or Synthetic Resin-Bound Renders/Plasters: Remove completely by suitable means, e.g. mechanically or via paint stripper, followed by surface cleaning with a high pressure steam jet, in compliance with the regulations. Apply one priming coat of CapaGrund Universal on slightly absorbent or even surfaces. Apply one priming coat of Dupa-grund on chalking, sanding, absorbent surfaces.

Surfaces Contaminated with Industrial Gases (Factory Fumes) or Soot: Coat with solvent-based façade paint Duparol.

Algae or Fungi-Infested Surfaces: Coat with the special fungicidal and algicidal façade paint Amphibolin-W.

Cracks in Renders/Plasters or Concrete: Coat with the crack covering system Cap-elast.

Unpainted Sandlime Brickwork: Coat with Sylitol or AmphiSilan products.

Surfaces with Salty Efflorescence: Remove salty efflorescence thoroughly by dry wire brushing and prime with Dupa-grund. Coating of such surfaces must be considered a risk for which we cannot accept responsibility, since even after the most thorough treatment the efflorescence may recur.

Defects: Repair small defects with Caparol Fassaden-Feinspachtel. Large defects up to 20 mm are preferably to be repaired with Histolith Renovierspachtel. Prime fillings (repair patches).

    Interior Surfaces

Renders/Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars)/Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 998-1: 1.5 N/mm2: Solid renders/plasters with normal absorbency require no preliminary treatment. Prime highly porous, sanding or absorent renders/plasters with OptiGrund E.L.F. or CapaSol LF.

Gypsum Plasters and Ready-Mixed Gypsum Plasters of Mortar Group PIV: Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Haftgrund. Sand/grind off sinter layers, remove all sanding dust and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Gypsum Wallboards: Prime absorbent boards with OptiGrund E.L.F. or Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.  Prime highly compact, smooth/even boards with Caparol-Haftgrund to promote adhesion.

Gypsum Plasterboards (Sandwich-Type Plaster Boards/Drywalls): Sand/grind off burrs. Prime and strengthen soft gypsum areas (repair patches) with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB. Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Haftgrund, OptiGrund E.L.F. or CapaSol  LF. Boards containing water-soluble content that leaves marks (discolouring substances) must be primed with Caparol AquaSperrgrund. In Germany: Follow BFS Data Sheet No. 12.

Concrete: Remove all residues of form release agents and chalking or sanding substances.

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) / Cellular Concrete: Prime with a 1 : 3 mixture of Capaplex and tap (potable) water.

Sand-Lime Brickwork and Fair Faced Brickwork (Brick Masonry): Coat without any pre-treatment.

Sound/Stable Existing Coatings: Matt, slightly absorbent coatings can be treated without preliminary preparation. Roughen/sand glossy surfaces and enamel coatings. Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Haftgrund.

Unsound Existing Coatings: Remove unsound coatings of enamel, dispersion/emulsion paint or synthetic resin-bound (organic) render/plaster. Prime slightly absorbent, smooth/even surfaces with Caparol-Haftgrund. Prime highly porous, sanding or absorbent surfaces with OptiGrund E.L.F. or CapaSol LF. Remove unsound mineral coatings by mechanical means and clean the surface from dust. Prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Glue-Bound Distemper (Limewater Colour): Wash off existing distemper very thoroughly, allow to dry and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Unpainted Woodchip/Ingrain, Relief or Embossed Wallpapers made of Paper: Coat without pre-treatment.

Non-Adherent Wallpapers: Remove non-adherent wallpapers completely and wash off all residues of wallpaper paste/glue and waste paper. Prime the substrate with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Mildewed/Mouldy Surfaces: Remove fungal attack (fungi/mildew/mould) by wet-cleaning, then use Capatox or FungiGrund and allow to dry thoroughly. Prime according to the type and condition of the substrate. Apply a finishing coat of Indeko-W, Malerit-W or Fungitex-W on badly infested surfaces, in compliance with legal and official regulations (follow e.g. Ordinance of Biocidal Agents and Ordinance on Hazardous Substances).

Surfaces Stained by Nicotine, Water, Soot or Fat/Grease: Remove nicotine, soot or fat/grease stains by washing with tap water adding a fat-dissolving household detergent, then allow the substrate to dry thoroughly. Clean dried-up water stains with a dry scrubbing brush. Apply an insulating prime coat of Caparol AquaSperrgrund. Apply one finishing coat of Caparol IsoDeck on strongly soiled surfaces.

Small Defects: After having completed the necessary preparations, repair small defects with Caparol Akkordspachtel in accordance with our processing specification, and if necessary, prime subsequently.

    Method of Application

Apply with paint brush, roller or airless spraying equipment.

    Airless Application:
    Spray angle: 50°
    Nozzle size: 0.019" – 0.025”
    Spray pressure: 150 – 180 bar

    Surface Coating System

    Full Colour Painting:
    Priming or intermediate coat
Apply AVA colourants, diluted up to a max. of 10 % with tap water.

    Finishing coat
Apply AVA colourants, diluted up to a max. of 5 % with tap water.

    Note:
The colours citreous, orange, magenta and red contain organic pigments which by nature have a low opacity. For full colour paintings with these colours, add approx. 5-10 % of white dispersion, latex facade or latex interior paint to the product, when applying the priming coat. Possibly a second finishing coat might be necessary.

    Consumption

Approx. 150 ml/m2 per coat on an even substrate. On rough-textured surfaces accordingly more. The exact rate of consumption is best established by a trial coating.

    Application Conditions

Lower Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+5 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.

    Drying/Drying Time

At +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity surface-dry and recoatable after 4 – 6 hours, rainproof after 24 hours. Lower temperatures and higher humidity extend these times.

    Note

When tinting emulsion or latex paints, a trial application is necessary to verify the shade, since high-bound paints have a tendency to darken somewhat during the drying process. For tinting white coating materials the current processing specification of tinted product must be followed. Mixed with White, the AVA colourant Yellow is only limited light-resistant when used on exterior surfaces. Do not use pure yellow pastel shades in the exteriors or mix it with other shades, e.g. Ochre. Acrylic enamels, silicate/mineral/silicone-based paints must not be tinted with AVA colourants. Always use special colourants, matched and formulated considering their specific properties and gloss levels.

To avoid lapping, the product should be applied wet-on-wet and without interruption. AVA is unsuitable for application on horizontal surfaces exposed to rain or moisture. Do not apply on sun heated substrates, during strong wind, fog or rain, high relative humidity or imminent rain and frost. Use scaffolding-nets, if necessary. Due to the use of Caparol-Tiefgrund TB in the interiors, a typical solvent odour is released, hence proper ventilation must be provided during application and drying phase. Use non-aromatic, low-odour AmphiSilan-Putzfestiger in sensitive areas.

Mechanical stress (scratching) on matt or silk-matt façade paints in dark shades may produce noticeable bright-toned stripes (no writing resistance).

In case of moist weather conditions (rain, dew, fog) yellowish transparent traces of additives, showing a slightly glossy shine and stickiness, may occur on the surface of compact, cool substrates or by means of delayed drying caused by the weather. The traces of additives are water-soluble and will disappear under the influence of a sufficient water quantity, e.g. repeated intensive rainfalls. The quality of the dried coating will not be affected by these changes. In case of direct reworking, all traces of additives must be pre-wetted and completely removed after a short reaction time. An additional priming coat of CapaGrund Universal must be applied. The traces do not occur when the product is applied under suitable climatic conditions.

Touching up surfaces is depending on many parameters and may be visible after drying.
