Suitable SubstratesThe substrate must be sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.
Substrate PreparationPlasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars) /
Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 998-1: 1.5 N/mm2:
Solid plasters with normal absorbency require no preliminary treatment. Prime highly porous and absorbent plasters with OptiGrund or CapaSol.
Gypsum and Ready-Mixed Gypsum Plasters of Mortar Group P IV /
Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 13279: 2 N/mm2:
Prime with Caparol-Haftgrund. Sintered plasters: Sand/grind off sintered skin and remove all abrasive dust, then apply one priming coat of Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.
Gypsum Wallboards: Prime absorbent boards with OptiGrund or Caparol-Tiefgrund TB. Prime highly compact, smooth boards with Caparol-Haftgrund to enhance adhesion.
Gypsum Plasterboards (Sandwich-Type Plaster Boards / Drywalls): Sand/grind off filler (mortar) burrs. Prime and strengthen soft gypsum areas (repairs) with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB. Prime with Caparol-Haftgrund, OptiGrund or use CapaSol. Boards containing water-soluble, discolouring substances that leave marks must be primed with Caparol AquaSperrgrund. Germany: Follow BFS-Merkblatt (Data Sheet) No. 12.
Concrete: Remove all residues of separating agent (formwork oil residues) and chalking or sanding substances.
Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) / Cellular Concrete: Prime with a 1 : 3 mixture of Capaplex and tap (potable) water.
Facing Brickwork or Fair-Faced Calcium Silicate Brick Masonry: No preliminary treatment required.Stable Existing Coatings: Matt, slightly absorbent coatings can be treated without a preliminary preparation. Roughen/sand glossy surfaces and enamel coatings. Prime with Caparol-Haftgrund.
Unstable Existing Coatings: Carefully remove unstable coatings of enamel, dispersion/emulsion paint or synthetic (organic) plaster. Prime slightly absorbent, smooth surfaces with Caparol-Haftgrund. Prime highly porous, sanding or absorbent substrates with OptiGrund or CapaSol. Remove unstable mineral paint coatings by mechanical means and remove dust. Prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.
Glue-Bound Distemper (Limewater Colour/Paint): Wash off the existing coating very thoroughly, allow to dry and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.
Unpainted Woodchip/Ingrain Wallpapers, Relief or Embossed Wallpapers (made of Paper):
No preliminary treatment required.
Non-Adherent Wallpapers: Remove completely and wash off all residues of wallpaper paste/glue and waste paper. Prime the substrate with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.
Mildewed Surfaces: Remove fungal attack (fungi/mildew/mould) by wet cleaning, then use Capatox or FungiGrund and allow to dry thoroughly. Prime according to the type and condition of the substrate. Apply a finishing coat of Indeko-W, Malerit-W or Fungitex-W on heavily mould affected surfaces, in compliance with legal/local and official regulations (follow e.g. Ordinance on Biological Agents and Ordinance on Hazardous Substances).
Surfaces Stained by Nicotine, Water, Soot or Fat/Grease: Wash off nicotine, soot or fat/grease stains with tap water, adding a fat-dissolving household cleaning agent, then allow the surface to dry well. Clean dried-up water stains by dry brushing off. Apply an insulating priming coat of Caparol AquaSperrgrund. Use Aqua-inn Nº1 for finishing coat on highly soiled surfaces.
Wood and Derived Timber Products: Coat with water-dilutable (waterborne), ecologically compatible Capacryl acrylic enamels or Capacryl PU enamels.
Small Defects: After having completed the necessary preparations, repair small defects with filler Caparol-Akkordspachtel in accordance with our processing specification, and if necessary, prime subsequently.
Method of ApplicationApply with paint brush, roller or spray with airless equipment.
Airless application: Spray angle: 50°; Nozzle size: 0.021" - 0.026"
Spray gun pressure: 150 to 180 bar
Clean tools/equipment immediately after use with water.
Surface Coating SystemOne even, liberally applied coat of CapaTrendGeo, diluted to a max. of 5 % with tap (potable) water.
Surfaces with colour contrast: One previously applied coat of product, diluted to a max. of 10 % with tap water, may be necessary. Prime unevenly absorbent substrates with Caparol-Haftgrund.
ConsumptionApprox. 140 ml/m2 per coat on smooth substrates. On roughly textured surfaces correspondingly more.
Determine the exact amount of material required by coating a test area on site.
Application ConditionsLow Temperature Limit for Application and Drying: +5 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.
Drying/Drying TimeAt +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity surface-dry and recoatable after 4 - 6 hours. Completely cured and ready for stress after approx. 3 days. Lower temperatures and higher relative humidity extend the drying time.
NoteTo avoid lapping, the product should be applied wet-on-wet and without interruption. Stir and sieve well before airless spray application.
When using Caparol-Tiefgrund TB in interiors, a typical solvent odour is released, hence proper ventilation must be provided during the application. Use non-aromatic, low-odour AmphiSilan-
Putzfestiger in sensitive areas.
Advice: Use our product CapaSilan for areas with unfavourable lighting conditions (sided/grazing light).
Mechanical loads/stress on matt paints in dark colour shades may produce bright-toned stripes as a product specific property. Thus, for intensively coloured surfaces subjected to mechanical loads, one
additional top coat of PremiumColor (in matching colour) is advisable. See Technical Information PremiumColor.
Touching up surfaces is depending on many parameters and may be visible after drying.
Germany: See BFS-Merkblatt (Data Sheet) No. 25.
German CertificatesThe Fraunhofer Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institute (WKI) has audited the inoffensive application for interior use.
The product is certified with German TÜV quality mark "pollutant-tested / supervised manufacturing process". German certificate is available on request.
Please Note (Status as at Date of Publication)Keep out of reach from children. Do not breathe spray dust. Use A2/P2 combination filter for paint spraying. Ensure good ventilation during use and drying. Do not eat, drink or smoke while using the product. In case of contact with eyes or skin, immediately and thoroughly rinse with water. Do not allow product to enter drains, waterways or soil. Clean utensils immediately after use with soap and water.
Due to its potassium silicate content, the reaction of silicate based coatings is highly alkaline. Hence protect skin and eyes from paint. The areas adjoining the surface to be coated must be carefully masked, in particular glass, ceramics, enamel/varnish coating, clinkers, natural stones, wood and metals. Wash splashes immediately and completely with plenty of clean water.
Further information: See Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
