TopGrund EG

Thin-film, white pigmented special priming paint for
an optimized open-time of following paint coatings.

Field of Application

Texture-retaining, thin-film, white pigmented special priming paint, suitable for minimizing the absorbency of matt existing coats of paint or new substrates. Particularly suitable for coating surfaces with problematic lighting conditions and a higher absorbency. For an optimized open time of subsequently applied paint coatings and minimized risk of visible lapping and roller marks.

Material Properties

  • Emission minimised, solvent-free, unplasticized.
  • Easy to apply, water-dilutable, ecologically compatible, low odour.
  • Longer open time for subsequently applied paint coatings.
  • Highly efficient.
  • Texture-retaining coating.
  • Excellent flow to obtain smooth surfaces.

Material Base / Vehicle

Modified synthetic resin dispersion/emulsion according to German standard DIN 55945.

Packaging/Package Size

  • Standard Product:
    5 l, 12.5 l

TopGrund EG can be tinted to a max. of 5 % with CaparolColor or AmphiColor® (AVA) colourants.
If more than one bucket is manually tinted, all product must be thoroughly mixed before use in order to avoid colour differences. Quantities of 100 litres or more in individual colours may be ordered ready-tinted ex factory.

TopGrund EG can be tinted to all current colour collections via the ColorExpress tinting & mixing machine system, up to luminosity/lightness index (LI) approx. 40.
Check tinted product before applying to avoid colour differences.
Always use tinted product of same batch, when applying on seamless surfaces.
Tinting may reduce the open time extending effect, depending on the quantity of pigment paste added.

Keep in a cool, but frost-free place.

Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.

Substrate Preparation

Interior Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars) / Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 998-1: 2 N/mm2: Solid plasters with normal absorbency require no preliminary treatment. Prime highly porous, sanding or absorbent plasters with OptiGrund or CapaSol.

Gypsum Mortar and Ready-Mixed Gypsum Plasters of Mortar Group/Class PIV / Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 13279: 2 N/mm2: Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Haftgrund or CapaSol. Sintered surfaces: Sand/grind off sintered skin, remove sanding dust and apply one priming coat of Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Gypsum Wallboards: Prime absorbent boards with OptiGrund or Caparol-Tiefgrund TB. Prime highly compact, smooth boards with Caparol-Haftgrund to improve bonding.

Gypsum Plaster Boards (Sandwich Type Plaster Boards / Am.: Drywalls): Sand/grind off filler burrs. Prime with OptiGrund or CapaSol. Strengthen soft gypsum areas (repairs) with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB . Boards containing water-soluble, discolouring substances that leave marks must be primed with Caparol AquaSperrgrund. In Germany: Follow BFS Data Sheet No. 12.

Concrete: Remove all residues of separating agent (formwork oil residues) and chalking or sanding substances.

Facing Brickwork and Fair-Faced Sand-Lime Brick Masonry: No preliminary treatment required.

Stable Existing Coatings: Treat matt (flat), slightly absorbent coatings without a preliminary preparation. Roughen/sand glossy surfaces and enamel coatings. Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Haftgrund.

Unstable Existing Coatings: Remove unstable enamels and emulsion/dispersion paints or synthetic (organic) plasters. Prime slightly absorbent, smooth surfaces with Caparol-Haftgrund. Prime highly porous, sanding or absorbent substrates with OptiGrund or CapaSol. Remove unstable coats of mineral paint by mechanical means and remove all dust. Prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Glue-Bound Distemper (Limewater Colour/Paint): Wash off the existing distemper very thoroughly to obtain a stable substrate, allow to dry and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Unpainted Woodchip/Ingrain, Relief or Embossed Wallpapers (made of Paper): No preliminary treatment required.

Non-Adherent Wallpapers: Remove completely and wash off all residues of wallpaper paste/glue and waste paper. Prime the substrate with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Mildewed Surfaces: Remove the cause of high substrate moisture, then remove all fungal attack (fungi/mildew/mould) by wet cleaning. Use Capatox or FungiGrund and allow to dry thoroughly. Prime according to the type and condition of the substrate. Apply a finishing coat of Indeko-W, Malerit-W or Fungitex-W on surfaces with an ongoing risk of fungal attack,  in compliance with legal and official regulations (follow e.g. Ordinance on Biological Agents and Ordinance on Hazardous Substances).

Surfaces Stained with Nicotine, Water, Soot or Fat/Grease: Wash off nicotine, soot or fat/grease stains with tap water, adding a fat-dissolving household cleaner, and allow the surface to dry well. Clean dried-up water stains by brushing-off. Prime with insulating Caparol AquaSperrgrund. Apply one finishing coat of Aqua-inn Nº1 on highly soiled surfaces.

Small Defects: After having completed the necessary preparations, repair small defects with Caparol-Akkordspachtel in accordance with our processing specification, and if necessary, prime subsequently.

Surface Coating System

Apply undiluted or dilute to a max. of 5 % with tap (potable) water to adjust for working consistency, if necessary.

Approx. 125 ml/m2 on smooth substrates. On roughly textured substrates coorespondingly more. Determine the exact amount of material required by coating a test area on site.

Application Conditions

Lower Temperature Limit for Application and Drying: +5 °C for product, ambient air and substrate.

Drying/Drying Time

At +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity recoatable after approx. 6 hours. Lower temperatures and higher humidity extend the drying time.
