    Field of Application

    OptiSilan TiefGrund is a transparent primer that penetrates deeply and provides a hydrophobic finish thanks to its particularly fine-grained polysiloxane hydrosol binder.

    Consolidating and egalising on coarsely porous, absorbent, slightly sanding renders, masonry and concrete surfaces, gypsum boards (GK boards), gypsum plasters, gypsum filler and weakly bonded dispersion filler. Subsequently coatable with dispersion, silicone resin and polymer resin paints.

    Storage

    Store in a cool, frost-free place and avoid large temperature fluctuations. Protect from direct sunlight. Keep opened containers tightly closed.
    Can be stored for at least 24 months in the original sealed packaging.

    Suitable Substrates

    • Mineral-bound plasters, concrete
    • Calcium silicate brickwork, uncoated
    • Coatings based on silicone resin, dispersion, synthetic resin
    • Gypsum and ready-mixed plaster, gypsum boards (plasterboard), gypsum building boards
    • Can be used in ETICS and VHF, in solid construction and renovation

    The substrate must be free of contamination, separating substances and dry. Observe VOB, Part C, DIN 18363, Section 3. To achieve colour-uniform coatings, ensure that the substrate has uniform absorbency.
    The substrate inspection is carried out in accordance with technical rules nos. 20 and 20.1 of the Bundesausschuss Farbe und Sachwertschutz e.V. (BFS, Federal Committee for Paint and Property Protection). Identify the cause of cracks in substrates and repair them appropriately, depending on the type and extent of the cracks.

    Substrate Preparation

    The following information is provided as examples and is not exhaustive. The coating is applied after any necessary substrate preparation.

    Protective measures:
    Carefully cover glass, ceramics, clinker, natural stone, lacquered, glazed, anodised and other surfaces to be protected. Remove splashes immediately with water.

    Cleaning the substrates:
    Clean dirty areas and remove any loose layers using a suitable method. Observe legal requirements. Allow sufficient drying time after treatment with water.
    Possible methods (not exhaustive):

    • Dry cleaning: sweeping, brushing.
    • Pressure washing: max. temperature 60°C, max. pressure 60 bar.
    • Mechanical cleaning: pickling, grinding, scraping, local dismantling, etc.

    The waiting time before new renders can be reworked depends, among other things, on weather conditions and the layer thickness. It is longer at low temperatures and high humidity. The information is based on 20 °C and 65 % relative humidity and is provided for guidance only.

    New mineral renders:

    • Guideline: Waiting time at least 1 day per mm of total layer thickness of base and top coat, but at least 14 days. Longer waiting times reduce the risk of lime efflorescence.
    • A coats with CapaGrund Universal (-W) reduces the risk of lime efflorescence in mineral top coats, meaning that the top coat can be applied after a minimum of 7 days. Alternatively, mineral renders can be coated with Sylitol Finish 130 (-W).
    • Specially tinted colours may require additional measures (e.g. longer standing times for the render substrate, priming with CapaGrund Universal (-W), weather protection).

    Old mineral renders, concrete, mineral coatings:
    Slightly absorbent, smooth: Prime coat with CapaGrund Universal.
    Coarse, porous, absorbent, slightly sandy: Prime coat with OptiSilan TiefGrund or CapaSol RapidGrund.
    Heavily sandy, chalky: Prime coat with OptiSilan Tiefgrund or Dupa-Putzfestiger.

    Old, pasty, matt coatings:
    Moderately absorbent: CapaGrund Universal diluted with max. 3% water.
    Highly absorbent, chalky, sandy: Base coat with OptiSilan TiefGrund or Dupa Putzfestiger.
    If necessary, apply an intermediate coat with CapaGrund Universal.

    Concrete with requirements according to DIN EN 1504-3:
    Please refer to the Disbon product range.

    Cracked render or concrete surfaces:
    Identify the cause of cracks in substrates and repair cracks appropriately depending on the type and extent of the crack. Depending on the crack class, coat with FibroSil, PermaSilan or the Cap-elast System.

    Areas affected by fungus or algae:
    Clean areas affected by fungus or algae using wet blasting in accordance with legal regulations. Once dry, pre-treat with Capatox in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Prime absorbent substrates with FungiGrund.

    Salt efflorescence, moisture:
    Mineral salts cause premature destruction of coatings. Brush off efflorescence until dry. When coating surfaces with salt efflorescence and (rising) moisture, no guarantee can be given for the permanent adhesion of the coating or the prevention of salt efflorescence.

    Sand-lime brick masonry:
    Only frost-resistant facing bricks that do not contain any foreign inclusions such as sand or clay that could cause discolouration or movement are suitable for painting. The joints must be free of cracks. Clean chalky/powdery surfaces. Brush off salt efflorescence with a dry brush. Observe BFS technical rule no. 2. Apply a base coat of OptiSilan TiefGrund.

    Interior

    Gypsum plasters according to DIN EN 13279-1 / compressive strength min. 2 N/mm2:
    Sand and remove dust from gypsum plasters with sintered skin, prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund or Sylitol RapidGrund 111.

    Gypsum boards/gypsum planks:
    Priming coat with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

    Gypsum boards (plasterboard):
    Sand off filler burrs. Prime sanded gypsum filler areas and the gypsum boards with OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund or Sylitol RapidGrund 111. In case of stronger absorption, prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund. For boards with water-soluble, discolouring ingredients, prime with Caparol AquaSperrgrund. Observe BFS Data Sheet No. 12, Part 2.

    Glue paint coatings:
    Wash off thoroughly. Alternatively, remove mechanically, wash again and apply a base coat with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

    Woodchip, relief or embossed paper wallpaper and patterned wallpaper:
    Coat without pre-treatment. For relief and embossed paper wallpapers and patterned wallpapers, carry out a test coat. Foamed wallpapers can cause intermediate reactions (stickiness, odour) when coated.

    Removed wallpapers:
    Wash off paste and waste paper residues. Apply a base coat with OptiSilan TiefGrund. Old lime plaster techniques: remove the sintered layer on the surface by sanding. If the wetting test with water on the sanded surface is negative, the entire lime plaster layer must be removed and the substrate rebuilt accordingly. If the wetting test with water on the sanded surface is positive, apply a base coat with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

    Defects:
    Fill deep holes accordingly.

    Note Q2/Q3 Filling / thin gypsum layers < 0.5 mm:
    When using gypsum-containing, hydraulically setting levelling compounds in quality level Q2/Q3, a transparent, water-based primer is recommended. For this, we refer to the Maler&Lackierer leaflet No. 2 -9/2020 "Adhesion problems of coatings on filled gypsum (cardboard) boards" of the Bundesverband Farbe, Gestaltung, Bautenschutz and the Bundesausschuss Farbe und Sachwertschutz. As an alternative to gypsum-based Q3 filling, filling with pasty filling compounds has proven successful.

    Method of Application

    The primer must not form a closed, glossy film.

    Application with brush/roller/brush
    Stir the material well.
    Apply wet-on-wet until fully saturated.

    Airless spraying
    Stir the material well.
    Lightly roll over the wet coating with a roller.
    Mist-free application is not guaranteed. Spraying is only permitted in compliance with environmental and occupational safety regulations.

    Airless equipment
    Spraying pressure: 50 bar
    Spraying angle: 60 °

    Low pressure
    Nozzle size: 4 mm

    Surface Coating System

    If necessary, apply primer(s) as part of the substrate preparation.

    Application with brush/roller

    • Normal and slightly absorbent substrates: undiluted in one coat or diluted with up to 1 part water.
    • Highly absorbent substrates: undiluted and thoroughly saturated.

    Airless spraying

    • Undiluted in one or two coats, depending on absorbency.

    Consumption

    • Approx. 150-250 ml/m2 per coat on smooth surfaces.
      Use more on rough, absorbent surfaces. Determine exact consumption by applying a test coat.

    Application Conditions

    During the application and in the drying phase, the ambient and substrate temperatures must not be below +5 °C and above +30 °C. Do not apply in direct sunlight, strong wind, fog or high humidity. Please refer to the leaflet "Verputzen, Wärmedämmen, Spachteln, Beschichten bei hohen und tiefen Temperaturen" (Rendering, Thermal Insulation, Filling, Coating at High and Low Temperatures) from the Bundesverband Ausbau und Fassade (Federal Association for Finishing and Facades).
    In unfavourable weather conditions, take suitable measures to protect the facade surfaces being treated.

    Drying/Drying Time

    The waiting time before recoating depends, among other things, on the ambient conditions and the layer thickness. It is longer at low temperatures and high humidity.

    The information refers to 20 °C and 65 % relative humidity and is intended as a guide.
    - Can be recoated after approx. 12 hours.

    Tool Cleaning

    Rinse with water immediately after use in accordance with legal regulations.

    Note

    Protect horizontal surfaces with special measures, e.g. metal covers.

    Contains 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one, reaction mass of 5-chloro-2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one and 2- methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one (3:1). May produce an allergic reaction.
