Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be solid, sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18 363, section 3.

Substrate Preparation

New Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PI (Lime Plaster),
PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars):
Leave to stand for 2-4 weeks. Treat the full surface with Histolith® Fluat and rinse with tap water.

Unpainted Existing Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PI, PII, PIII and
Existing Coats of Mineral Paint:
Carefully clean the surface. Remove all layers/coatings of low adherence. Strengthen plasters with sanding surface: Apply one priming coat of Histolith® Spezialgrundierung (special primer).

Stable Existing Coats of Matt Dispersion/Emulsion Paint:
Carefully clean the surface. Apply one priming coat of Histolith® Emulsionsfarbe, diluted 10 % with tap (potable) water.
Coats of glossy paint: Roughen/sand the surface, remove sanding dust and apply one priming coat of Histolith® Weißgrund.

Gypsum Plasters in Mortar Group/Class PIV (Gypsum Mortar and Ready-Mixed Gypsum Plaster) and Plaster of Paris:
Strengthen soft gypsum plasters with Histolith® Spezialgrundierung (special primer).
Sand gypsum plasters with sintered skin, then remove sanding dust and apply one priming coat of Histolith® Spezialgrundierung.

Coats of Glue-Bound Distemper:
Carefully wash off. Prime with Histolith® Spezialgrundierung (special primer).

Mildewed/Mouldy Surfaces:
Wash off the fungal (fungi/mildew/mould) attack. Apply Histolith® Algenentferner (algae remover) on the fully dry surface, then allow to dry again. Prior consultation with our technical assistance is needed to obtain the correct surface coating system. Always follow current legal/local and official regulations (e.g. Ordinance on Biocidal Agents and Ordinance on Hazardous Substances).

Method of Application

Apply with paint brush in short strokes. For decorative paint techniques use modelling tools, sponge, cloth and the like.

Surface Coating System

Priming/First Coat:
One first coat of Histolith® Emulsionsfarbe, diluted to a max. of 10 % with tap (potable) water. Strengthen wiping, chalking or highly absorbent substrates previously with one priming coat of Histolith® Spezialgrundierung (special primer).

Finishing Coat:
Histolith® Emulsionsfarbe, diluted to a max. of 5 % with tap (potable) water.

Translucent Glaze/Scumble Coats:
Histolith® Emulsionsfarbe is dilutable with Histolith® Emulsion in order to obtain semi-transparent glaze/scumble coats. Determine the mixing ratio by trials.

Consumption

Approx. 150 ml/m2 per coat on smooth substrates. On roughly textured surfaces correspondingly more. Determine the exact amount of material required by coating a test area on site.

Application Conditions

Lower Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+8 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.

Drying/Drying Time

At +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity surface-dry and recoatable after 4 - 6 hours.
Lower temperatures and higher humidity extend the drying time.

Tool Cleaning

Clean tools/equipment immediately after use with water.

Note

To avoid lapping the emulsion paint should be applied wet-on-wet and without interruption.
