    Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. Germany: Follow German standard VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.

    Substrate Preparation

    Exterior Substrates

Exterior Renders in Mortar Groups/Classes PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) & P III (Cement Mortars)/Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 998-1: 1.5 N/mm2: New renders must be left untreated for a sufficiently long holding time, normally for 2 weeks at 20 °C and 65 % relative humidity. Adverse weather conditions, influenced e.g. by wind or rain, extend the curing process and correspondingly longer holding times must be respected. The risk of calcareous efflorescence is reduced by an additional priming coat of CapaGrund Universal and the alkaline finishing render may be coated after a holding time of 7 days.
Existing renders: Repairs must have adequate time to cure and dry. Highly porous, absorbent, slightly sanding renders: Apply one priming coat of OptiGrund. Prime highly sanding, chalking renders with Dupa-grund. Coat mineral lightweight renders of mortar group PIc with Sylitol or AmphiSilan products.

Concrete: Concrete surfaces with dirt deposits or fines/sintered layer must be cleaned mechanically or with high-pressure water jet, in compliance with the regulations. Apply one priming coat of CapaGrund Universal on slightly absorbent or smooth surfaces. Apply one priming coat of OptiGrund on highly porous, slightly sanding or absorbent surfaces. Prime chalking surfaces with Dupa-grund.

Cement-Bound Wood Chipboards (Particle Boards): Due to the high alkalinity of cement-bound wood chipboards (particle boards) one priming coat of Disbon 481 EP-Uniprimer must be applied, to prevent the forming of calcareous efflorescence.

Facing/Fairfaced Brickwork (Unrendered Masonry): Only absorbent clinker bricks of frost resistant quality and free of foreign inclusions are suitable for exterior coatings. Masonry must be dry and free of salts/salty efflorescence, jointing must be free of cracks. Apply one priming coat of Dupa-grund. If brownish discolouration appears on the intermediate coat, then recoat with solvent-based facade paint Duparol.

Sound/Stable Coatings of Enamel/Varnish or Emulsion Paint: Roughen the surface of glossy/shiny coatings. Clean existing soiled, chalking paint coats by high-pressure water jet, in compliance with the regulations. Apply one priming coat of CapaGrund Universal. Prime with Dupa-grund, if other cleaning methods are used (washing, wire brushing, hosing with water).

Sound/Stable Coatings of Synthetic (Organic) Renders: Clean existing renders/plasters by suitable means. Allow wet cleaned surfaces to dry thoroughly before further treatment. Prime with CapaGrund Universal. Coat new renders without pre-treatment.

Sound/Stable Existing Silicate Paints and Renders: Coat with Sylitol or AmphiSilan products.

Unstable Mineral Coatings: Remove the coating completely by sanding off, brushing off, scraping off, using high-pressure water jet in compliance with the regulations, or by other suitable means. Allow wet cleaned surfaces to dry thoroughly before further treatment. Prime with Dupa-grund.

Unstable Coatings of Enamel, Emulsion Paint or Synthetic (Organic) Render: Remove completely by suitable means, e.g. mechanically or via paint stripper, followed by surface cleaning with a high-pressure steam jet, in compliance with the regulations. Apply one priming coat of CapaGrund Universal on slightly absorbent or smooth surfaces. Apply one priming coat of Dupa-grund on chalking, sanding, absorbent surfaces.

Surfaces Soiled by Factory Fumes or Soot: Coat with solvent-based facade paint Duparol.

Surfaces with Fungal or Algal Attack: Coat with the special fungicidal and algicidal facade paint Amphibolin-W.

Cracks in Renders or Concrete: Coat with the crack covering system Cap-elast.

Unpainted Sand-Lime Brickwork: Coat with Sylitol or AmphiSilan products.

Surfaces with Salty Efflorescence: Remove salty efflorescence by dry wire brushing and prime with Dupa-grund. Coating of such surfaces must be considered a risk for which we cannot accept responsibility, since even after the most thorough treatment the efflorescence may recur.

Defects: Repair small defects with fine filler Caparol Fassaden-Feinspachtel. Large defects up to 20 mm should preferably be repaired with Histolith Renovierspachtel. Prime fillings (repair patches).

    Interior Surfaces

Interior Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars)/Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 998-1: 1.5 N/mm2: Solid plasters with normal absorbency require no preliminary treatment. Prime highly porous, sanding or absorbent plasters with OptiGrund or CapaSol.

Gypsum Plasters and Ready-Mixed Gypsum Plasters of Mortar Group PIV/Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 13279 S2: 2 N/mm2: Prime with Caparol-Haftgrund. Sand/grind off sintered skin, remove all sanding dust and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Gypsum Wallboards: Prime absorbent boards with OptiGrund or Caparol-Tiefgrund TB. Prime highly compact, smooth boards with Caparol-Haftgrund to promote adhesion.

Gypsum Plasterboards (Sandwich-Type Plaster Boards/Drywalls): Sand/grind off mortar burrs. Prime and strengthen soft gypsum areas (repair patches) with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB. Prime with Caparol-Haftgrund, OptiGrund or CapaSol. Boards with water-soluble, discolouring substances of content that leaves marks must be primed with Caparol AquaSperrgrund.
Germany: Follow BFS-Merkblatt (Data Sheet) No. 12.

Concrete: Remove all residues of separating agent (formwork oil residues) and chalking or sanding substances.

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) / Cellular Concrete: Prime with a 1:3 mixture of Capaplex and tap (potable) water.

Facing Sand-Lime Brickwork and Fair Faced Brickwork (Brick Masonry): No preliminary treatment required.

Sound/Stable Existing Coatings: Directly rework matt, slightly absorbent coatings. Roughen/sand glossy surfaces and enamel/varnish coatings. Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Haftgrund.

Unstable Existing Coatings: Carefully remove unstable coatings of enamel/varnish, dispersion/emulsion paint or synthetic (organic) plaster. Prime slightly absorbent, smooth surfaces with Caparol-Haftgrund. Prime highly porous, sanding or absorbent substrates with OptiGrund or CapaSol. Remove unstable coatings of silicate/mineral paint by mechanical means and clean the surface from dust. Prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Glue-Bound Distemper (Limewater Colour/Paint): Wash off existing distemper very thoroughly, allow to dry and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Unpainted Woodchip/Ingrain, Relief or Embossed Wallpapers (made of Paper): No preliminary treatment required.

Non-Adherent Wallpapers: Remove completely. Wash off all residues of wallpaper paste/glue and waste paper. Prime the substrate with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.Mildewed/Mouldy Surfaces: Remove fungal attack (fungi/mildew/mould) by wet cleaning/scrubbing. Then use Capatox or FungiGrund and allow to dry thoroughly. Prime  according to the type and condition of the substrate. Apply a finishing coat of Indeko-W, Malerit-W or Fungitex-W on strongly infested surfaces, in compliance with legal/local and official regulations (follow e.g. Ordinance of Biocidal Agents and Ordinance on Hazardous Substances).

Surfaces Stained by Nicotine, Water, Soot or Fat/Grease: Remove nicotine, soot or fat/grease stains by washing with tap water, adding a fat-dissolving household detergent, then allow the substrate to dry thoroughly. Clean dried-up water stains with a dry scrubbing brush. Apply one insulating prime coat of Caparol AquaSperrgrund. Apply one finishing coat of Caparol IsoDeck on strongly soiled surfaces.

Small Defects: After having completed the necessary preparations, repair small defects with filler Caparol-Akkordspachtel in accordance with our processing specification, and if necessary, prime subsequently.

    Method of Application

Apply with paint brush, roller or spraying equipment.

    Airless Application:
    Spray angle: 50°
    Nozzle size: 0.019" - 0.025"
    Spray pressure: 150 - 180 bar

    Surface Coating System

Priming and/or Intermediate Coat: CaparolColor, diluted to a max. of 10 % with tap (potable) water.

Finishing Coat: CaparolColor, diluted to a max. of 5 % with tap water.

    Consumption

Approx. 150 ml/m2 per coat on smooth substrates. On roughly textured surfaces correspondingly more. Determine the exact amount of material required by coating a test area on site.

    Application Conditions

Low Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+5 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.

    Drying/Drying Time

At +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity surface-dry and recoatable after 4-6 hours, rainproof after 24 hours. Lower temperatures and higher humidity extend the drying time.

    Tool Cleaning

Clean tools (paint brushes/rollers) and airless equipment immediately after use with tap water.

    Note

All CaparolColor colours are non-fading at best, when applied purely on exterior surfaces. When highly blended with White, colours in the shades of red, orange, yellow and green are only limited non-fading (follow information given in the colour fan).

To avoid lapping, the product should be applied wet-on-wet and without interruption. Do not apply on horizontal surfaces exposed to rain or moisture. When tinting emulsion or latex paints, a trial application is necessary to verify the shade, since strongly bound paints have a tendency to darken somewhat during the drying process.
Acrylic enamels, silicate/mineral/silicone-based paints must not be tinted with CaparolColor. Always use special colourants, matched and formulated considering their specific properties and gloss levels.
Do not apply on sun heated substrates, during strong wind, fog or rain, high relative humidity or imminent rain and frost. Use scaffolding-nets, if necessary.

Due to the use of Caparol-Tiefgrund TB in interiors, a typical solvent odour is released, hence proper ventilation must be provided during application and drying phase. Use non-aromatic, low-odour AmphiSilan-Putzfestiger in sensitive areas.
Mechanical stress (scratching) on matt or silk-matt facade paints in dark shades may produce visible bright-toned stripes as a product specific property (no writing resistance).

In case of moist weather conditions (rain, dew, fog) yellowish transparent traces of additives, showing a slightly glossy shine and stickiness, may occur on the surface of compact, cool substrates or by means of delayed drying caused by the weather. The traces of additives are water-soluble and will disappear under the influence of a sufficient water quantity, e.g. repeated intensive rainfalls. The quality of the dried coating will not be affected by these changes. In case of direct reworking, all traces of additives must be pre-wetted and completely removed after a short reaction time. An additional priming coat of CapaGrund Universal must be applied. The traces cannot occur when the product is applied under suitable climatic conditions.
Touching up surfaces is depending on many parameters and may be visible after drying.
Germany: See BFS-Merkblatt (Data Sheet) No. 25.
When tinting emulsion paints, latex paints or synthetic (organic) plasters, the current processing specification of tinted product must always be followed.

Compatibility with other Paint Products: The product is compatible with all types of Caparol dispersion/emulsion/latex/plastic paints and synthetic (organic) renders/plasters.
