    Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be sound/stable, dry, and clean and free from all substances that may preventadhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18 363, section 3.Suitable SubstratesDepending on the substrate and its condition, a suitable priming coat must be applied prior to filler/surfacer application. Glossy, stable existing coatings must be roughened beforehand.

    Substrate Preparation

Renders according to DIN EN 998-1 class CS II - CS IV / compressive strength min. 2 N/mm2: Solid, normally absorbent and even renders can be coated without primer coat. Prime slightly sanding, absorbent renders with OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund or Sylitol RapidGrund 111. Prime more sanding renders with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Gypsum plasters according to DIN EN 13279-1 / compressive strength min. 2 N/mm2: Sand and remove dust from gypsum plasters with sintered skin, prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund or Sylitol RapidGrund 111.

Gypsum boards/gypsum planks: Priming coat with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Gypsum boards (plasterboard): Sand off filler burrs. Prime sanded gypsum filler areas and the gypsum boards with OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund or Sylitol RapidGrund 111. In case of stronger absorption, prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund. For boards with water-soluble, discolouring ingredients, prime with Caparol AquaSperrgrund. Observe BFS Data Sheet No. 12, Part 2.

Concrete: Remove any release agent residues and chalking, sanding substances. Prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund or Sylitol RapidGrund 111.

Sand-lime masonry: Dry brush off existing salt efflorescence. Prime with CapaSol RapidGrund or Sylitol® Rapidgrund 111. In case of stronger absorption, prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Load-bearing coatings: Recoat matt, slightly absorbent coatings directly. Roughen glossy surfaces and paint coatings.

Non-bearing coatings: Remove non-stable varnish and dispersion paints or synthetic resin plaster coatings. Prime coarsely porous, sanding or absorbent surfaces with OptiSilan TiefGrund. Remove non-bearing mineral paint coatings mechanically and remove dust from the surfaces. Apply one priming coat of OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Glue-Bound Distemper (Limewater Colour/Paint): Wash off the existing distemper very thoroughly, allow to dry and prime with Dupa-Putzfestiger. Alternatively, remove mechanically, rinse and prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Woodchip, relief or embossed wallpapers made of paper and sample wallpapers: Coat without pre-treatment. For relief and embossed wallpapers made of paper as well as sample wallpapers, apply a trial coat. Foamed wallpapers may cause intermediate reactions (stickiness, odour) when coated.

Removed wallpaper: Wash off paste and waste paper residues. Apply one priming coat of OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Mould-infested surfaces: Remove mould by wet cleaning. Wash surfaces with Capatox and allow to dry thoroughly. Observe the legal and official regulations (e.g. the Biological Substances Ordinance and the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances). Increased protection against renewed infestation can be achieved with the products Malerit-W, Indeko-W and Fungitex-W.

Surfaces with nicotine, water, soot or grease stains: Wash off nicotine stains as well as soot or grease stains with water, adding a grease-dissolving cleaning agent, and allow to dry thoroughly. Clean dried water stains by brushing dry. Apply a barrier priming coat of Caparol AquaSperrgrund fein (see Technical Information No. 384) orCaparol-Filtergrund grob (see Technical Information No. 845).

Wood and wood-based materials: Apply one priming coat of Capacryl Holz-Isogrund. On boards factory-coated with melamine resin, apply one priming coat of Capacryl-Haftprimer. The joint areas/panel joints are not to be finished crack-free. Here, for higher visual requirements, a decoupling layer with thin gypsum boards with appropriate filling is recommended.

Old lime filler techniques: Remove sintered layer on the surface by sanding. In case of negative wetting test with water on sanded surface, the entire lime filler layer must be removed and the substrate must be rebuilt accordingly. In case of positive wetting test with water on sanded surface, prime with OptiSilan TiefGrund.

Chips, joints and defects: Fill the recess with Füllspachtel P.

Note Q2/Q3 Filling / thin gypsum layers < 0.5 mm: When using gypsum-containing, hydraulically setting levelling compounds in quality level Q2/Q3, a transparent, water-based primer is recommended. For this, we refer to the Maler&Lackierer leaflet No. 2 -9/2020 "Adhesion problems of coatings on filled gypsum (cardboard) boards" of the Bundesverband Farbe, Gestaltung, Bautenschutz and the Bundesausschuss Farbe und Sachwertschutz. As an alternative to gypsum-based Q3 filling, filling with pasty filling compounds has proven successful.

    Method of Application

    Surface Smoothing manually:
Stir well before use and draw with a stainless steel trowel.

    Suitable spraying equipment:
The filler can be applied with plaster delivery devices and powerful airless devices. The delivery distance of the product depends on the performance of the airless equipment and can be obtained from the equipment manufacturer.
Remove all filters from airless guns.
Airless spray guns with a higher flow rate recommended by the manufacturer should be used for levelling compounds. Depending on the performance capacity of the airless device, temperatures below +10 °C may restrict delivery due to slight changes in the viscosity of the filler. A material temperature of +10 °C must be ensured for these devices.

    Spray application:
The coating is particularly efficient and economical when used in conjunction with powerful spraying equipment for wall and ceiling surfaces.

    Work sequence:
Supply the appliance with levelling compound. We recommend using a material hopper. Full-surface, saturated spray application with filler, undiluted, and immediate levelling with a suitable steel trowel. The filler can be sanded after drying. Sanding meshes such as Abranet from Mirka or GranatNet from Festool with a grain size of 120 enable more effective work performance.

    Suitable spraying equipment:
The filler can be applied with plaster delivery devices and with powerful airless devices. Airless spray guns recommended by the respective manufacturer should be used for levelling compounds. These guns have a higher flow rate and make it much easier to apply the levelling compound, and stirring with an agitator is recommended for buckets.

    Device-dependent spraying head required

    Spray application with mottling:
The coating and sprinkling of wall and ceiling surfaces made of e.g. prefabricated concrete components, smoothly formed in-situ concrete and aerated concrete as well as plasterboards and plasterboards using the thin plaster method with powerful sprayers is efficient and economical.

    Work sequence:
Connect the spraying device to the container using the connection tap available from us and a corresponding connection hose. Full-surface, saturated spray application with filler, undiluted and immediate levelling with a suitable steel trowel.

After drying, the filler can be wet-felted or dry-sanded. After the levelled surface has dried thoroughly, a sprinkle application with filler in fine to coarse texture can be applied.
The texture can be varied depending on the degree of dilution and the nozzle width used. The sprinkle application can be left untreated on ceiling surfaces. On substrates that have not yet reached their levelling moisture content, partial light-dark fluctuations may be noticeable after the speckle application. A levelling coat is recommended here.

    Work team and performance:
A spraying crew consists of a team of 2-3 workers. One member of the team applies the material in a uniform layer thickness with the spraying device, 2 employees pull off the applied material evenly and then smooth the surface.

Special processing instructions for levelling and sprinkling:
In larger rooms, the ceiling must be levelled first before the wall surfaces can be sprayed. In this case, however, the upper part of the wall surfaces (the so-called head) should also be sprayed and levelled up to a height that can be reached from the floor. The lower part of the wall surfaces is then sprayed and also smoothed.

    Surface Coating System

    Recoat the levelled surface with:

Caparol dispersion paints, Caparol latex paints, Caparol renders:

After drying, apply a priming coat of OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund or Sylitol RapidGrund 111 and, if plaster is subsequently applied, an intermediate coat of Putzgrund 610.

    Caparol glass/cellulose wall coverings:

After drying, apply a primer coat with OptiSilan TiefGrund or CapaSol RapidGrund.

    Surface-finished, highly diffusion-blocking or diffusion-tight wall coverings:
At least Akkordspachtel KF must be used. The technical specifications of the wall covering manufacturer must also be observed.

    Consumption

Spray Application: Approx. 1600 g/m2 per mm coating thickness.
Texturing Spatter Technique: Approx. 500 - 800 g/m2, depending on the desired texture.

    Application Conditions

Lower Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+5 °C for substrate and ambient air.
Lower product temperature limit: +10 °C.

    Drying/Drying Time

Approx. 12 - 48 hours, depending on building moisture, temperature and layer (coating) thickness.

    Tool Cleaning

Clean tools/equipment immediately after use with clean water.

    Note

An evenly absorbent and non-slip substrate is required to apply the maximum specified layer thickness. Under these conditions, the material can be applied in one coat without starting to run, sag or crack. After application, the filler must be expected to shrink in volume over the entire surface as it dries. Particularly in the case of thick layers of material to be applied over large areas and on coarse substrates, a double application is usual and recommended in view of the building site conditions and in order to maintain the necessary drying times.

Caparol-Akkordspachtel SXL is not suitable for damp rooms.

Due to the use of natural fillers, slight differences in colour shade are possible. If a speckle application is carried out which is to remain uncoated, we recommend that the same production numbers are used for the filler and the speckle application.

When used as a sprinkling on wall surfaces, the coating should be reworked with Caparol dispersion paints. This allows a higher resistance to be achieved, which is often necessary for wall surfaces.

When using plaster conveyor equipment, abrasion may occur, especially with new screw conveyors and hoses. Please observe the manufacturer's instructions for the plaster conveyor equipment.

Fine air bubbles may form on dense, less absorbent substrates. These can be removed after a short flash-off time by smoothing again. The time for re-smoothing depends on the temperature and humidity of the object. If bubbles appear again after re-smoothing, smoothing was carried out a little too early. Then repeat the smoothing process. To minimise this effect, a pigmented primer coat with Caparol Haftgrund is required.

In the case of rough, textured substrates, subsequent levelling may be necessary to achieve a smooth, even surface.

When reworking gypsum-based levelling compounds, swelling, blistering and flaking may occur due to prolonged exposure to moisture. It is therefore important to ensure rapid drying through adequate ventilation and temperature. Observe information sheet no. 2 "Filling of gypsum boards" of the German Gypsum and Gypsum Board Industry Association. Apply a primer coat of OptiSilan TiefGrund, CapaSol RapidGrund or Sylitol RapidGrund 111.
