Histolith Sol-Silikat

Sol-silicate façade paint with unique properties.

LV Texte

Field of Application

Histolith® Sol-Silikat (Silicate) is a mineral façade paint with unique properties: The novel type of mineral binder combination allows a wide range of applications. The admixture of lithium water glass minimises potassium efflorescence and produces exceptionally brilliant colours.
Histolith® Sol-Silikat (Silicate) combines the benefits of well-proven silicate paints and silicone resin paints and has excellent application properties. Suitable for use on mineral substrates and for the renovation of existing coats of matt dispersion/emulsion and silicone resin paint.

Material Properties

  • Highly weather and light resistant.
  • Extremely low soiling tendency.
  • Mineral matt surface.
  • Non thermoplastic.
  • Non film forming, highly permeable to CO2
  • Unplasticized.
  • Non-combustible.
  • Meets the requirements of VOB DIN 18363 for dispersion/emulsion silicate paints.

Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.

Substrate Preparation

New Renders/Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PIc (Hydraulic Lime Plaster),
PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars):
New renders/plasters must be left untreated for a sufficiently long time, minimum 7 day at 20°C and 65 % rel. humidity. Remove sintered layers with Histolith® Fluat.

Untreated Existing Renders/Plasters and Mineral Paints:
Clean the surface thoroughly and remove all layers of low adherence. Apply one priming coat of Histolith® Sol-Silikat-Fixativ, thinned in ratio of 2:1 with tap water depending on substrate absorbency.

Sound Existing Coats of Matt Dispersion/Emulsion Paint and Silicone Resin Paint:
Clean the surface thoroughly and remove all layers of low adherence.

Render/Plaster Repairs:
Repair mortars should match the existing render/plaster in type and texture and must be allowed to set and harden thoroughly before being painted. Treat all repairs with Histolith® Fluat and rinse with tap (potable) water.

Brickwork / Brick Masonry:
Only brickwork made of absorbent bricks is suitable. Hard-burned bricks and clinkers are unsuitable. Always check for compatibility and apply a trial coating. Carefully clean the surface. Touch up damaged mortar joints. Apply one priming coat of Histolith® Sol-Silikat-Fixativ, thinned in ratio of 2:1 with tap (potable) water.

Natural Stones:
Clean the surface thoroughly and remove all layers of low adherence. Touch up damaged mortar joints.
Note:
Natural stones with water-soluble substances of content may show efflorescence on the paint coat and visible stains may occur. Always check for compatibility and apply a trial coating.

Surfaces with Fungal and Algal Attack:
Wash off the fungal (fungi/mildew/mould) or algal attack. Allow the surface to dry, then treat with Capatox (algae remover) and allow to dry. Prior consultation with our technical assistance is needed to achieve the correct surface coating system.

Method of Application

Apply preferably by paint brush on listed (landmarked) buildings, otherwise use paint roller or spraying equipment.
Spray angle: 50°
Nozzle size: 0.026”
Spray pressure: 150 - 180 bar

Surface Coating System

Slightly and Evenly Absorbent Substrates:
Apply one priming coat of Histolith® Sol-Silikat (Silicate), thinned up to a max. of 10 % with Histolith® Sol-Silikat-Fixativ, if necessary.
Apply one finishing coat of Histolith® Sol-Silikat (Silicate), thinned up to a max. of 5 % with Histolith® Sol-Silikat-Fixativ, if necessary.

Highly and Unevenly Absorbent Substrates:
Apply one priming coat of Histolith® Sol-Silikat-Fixativ, thinned in the ratio of 2:1 with tap (potable) water.
Apply one priming and one intermediate coat of Histolith® Sol-Silikat / Silicate (may be thinned up to a max. of 5 % with Histolith® Sol-Silikat-Fixativ, if necessary).

Consumption

Approx. 250-300 ml/m2 for two coats on an even substrate. On rough-textured surfaces correspondingly more. The exact rate of consumption is best established by a trial coating on site.

Application Conditions

Lower Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+8 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.

Drying/Drying Time

At +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity surface-dry and recoatable after 12 hours. Rain resistant after approx. 24 hours. Lower temperatures and higher humidity extend the drying time.

Tool Cleaning

Clean tools/equipment immediately after use with water.

Note

To avoid lapping, the material should be applied wet-on-wet and without interruption. Do not apply on horizontal or inclined surfaces exposed to rain or moisture.
Do not apply on sun heated substrates, during high temperatures, strong wind, extremely high relative humidity, fog or rain, or imminent rain and frost. Night frost must be avoided. Protect the façade with suitable scaffolding-nets or tarpaulins, if necessary.
In case of moist weather conditions (rain, dew, fog) yellowish transparent traces of additives, showing a slightly glossy shine and stickiness, may occur on the surface of compact, cool substrates or by means of delayed drying caused by the weather. The traces of additives are water-soluble and will disappear under the influence of a sufficient water quantity, e.g. repeated intensive rainfalls. The quality of the dried coating will not be affected by these changes. In case of direct reworking, all traces of additives must be pre-wetted and completely removed after a short reaction time. An additional key coat of CapaGrund Universal must be applied. The traces cannot occur when the material is applied under suitable climatic conditions.
Touching up surfaces is depending on many parameters and may be visible after drying.
Mechanical loads/scratching on matt facade paints in dark shades may produce bright-toned stripes as a product specific property (no writing resistance).

Protective Measures:
The areas adjoining the surface to be painted should be carefully masked, in particular glass, ceramics, enamel/varnish coatings, clinkers, natural stone, metals and wood.

Please Note (Status as at Date of Publication)

If medical advice is needed, have product container or label at hand. Keep out of reach of children. Warning! Hazardous respirable droplets may be formed when sprayed. Do not breathe spray or mist. Due to its potassium silicate content, the reaction of silicate based coatings is highly alkaline. Hence protect skin and eyes from paint.

Disposal

Materials and all related packaging must be disposed of in a safe way in accordance with the full requirements of the local, regional, national and international authorities.

EU limit value for the VOC content

of this product (category A/c): 40 g/l (2010). This product contains max. 30 g/l VOC
