Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.

Substrate Preparation

Interior Plasters  in Mortar Groups/Classes PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars) / Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 998-1: 1.5 N/mm2:
Solid plasters with normal absorbency require no preliminary treatment. Prime highly porous, sanding or absorbent plasters with OptiGrund or CapaSol.

Gypsum Mortar and Ready-Mixed Gypsum Plasters of Mortar Group/Class PIV / Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 13279: 2 N/mm2:
Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Haftgrund. Sintered surfaces: Sand/grind off sintered skin, remove sanding dust and apply one priming coat of Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Gypsum Wallboards:
Prime absorbent boards with OptiGrund or Caparol-Tiefgrund TB. Prime highly compact, smooth boards with Caparol-Haftgrund to improve bonding.

Gypsum Plasterboards (Sandwich-Type Plaster Boards / Am.: Drywalls):
Sand/grind off filler burrs. Prime and strengthen soft gypsum areas (repairs) with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB. Prime with Caparol-Haftgrund, OptiGrund or CapaSol. Boards containing water-soluble, discolouring substances that leave marks must be primed with Caparol AquaSperrgrund. In Germany: Follow BFS Data Sheet No. 12.

Concrete:
Remove residues of separating agent and chalking or sanding substances.

Sound/Stable Existing Coatings:
Matt, slightly absorbent coatings can be coated without a preliminary preparation. Roughen/sand glossy surfaces and enamel coatings. Prime with Caparol-Haftgrund.

Unstable Existing Coatings:
Carefully remove unstable coatings of enamel, dispersion/emulsion paint or synthetic (organic) plasters. Prime slightly absorbent, smooth surfaces with Caparol-Haftgrund. Prime highly porous, sanding or absorbent substrates with OptiGrund or CapaSol. Remove unstable coatings of mineral paint completely by mechanical means and remove dust. Prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Glue-Bound Distemper (Limewater Colour/Paint):
Wash off the existing distemper very thoroughly to the stable substrate, allow to dry and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Non-Adherent Wallpapers:
Remove completely and wash off all residues of wallpaper paste/glue and waste paper. Prime the substrate with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Mildewed Surfaces:
Remove fungal attack (fungi/mildew/mould) by wet cleaning, then use Capatox or FungiGrund and allow to dry thoroughly. Prime according to the type and condition of the substrate. Apply a finishing coat of Indeko-W, Malerit-W or Fungitex-W on heavily mould affected/contaminated surfaces, in compliance with legal and official regulations (follow e.g. Ordinance on Biological Agents and Ordinance on Hazardous Substances).

Surfaces Stained by Nicotine, Water, Soot or Fat/Grease:
Wash off nicotine, soot or fat/grease stains with water and a fat-dissolving household cleaning agent, and allow the surface to dry well. Clean dried-up water stains by dry brushing-off. Prime with insulating Caparol AquaSperrgrund. Apply an additional finishing coat of Caparol Aqua-inn Nº1 on highly soiled surfaces.

Wood and Derived Timber Products::
Coat with water-dilutable, ecologically compatible Capacryl acrylic enamels or with Capacryl PU enamels.

Small Defects:
After having completed the necessary preparations, repair small defects with Caparol-Akkordspachtel in accordance with our processing specification, and if required, prime subsequently.

Surface Coating System

Roller Application
Two even, liberally applied coats of Rauhfaserfarbe, diluted to a max. of 15 % with tap (potable) water, using a short-pile lambswool (sheepskin) roller. Do not spread too far, in order to obtain a homogeneous texture.
To achieve a flawless visual appearance of walls, first of all apply a horizontal coat and then spread vertically.

When coating ceilings, apply the paint at right angle to the incidence of light, then equalise in the direction of light incidence. For corners and edges apply a saturating coat and texture the surface, using a brush or roller (special type, suitable for radiators). While applying stir the paint repeatedly.

Spray Application
Priming Coat:
Use Caparol-Haftgrund or a wash-resistant Caparol interior emulsion paint, e.g. Malerit, tinted to match the following coat in shade.

Finishing Coat:
One even, liberally applied coat of Rauhfaserfarbe, diluted to a max. of 10 % with tap water, using suitable spraying equipment for coating large surfaces.
Nozzle: 6 - 8 mm
Pressure: 4 bar
Clean tools/equipment immediately after use with water.

Consumption

Approx. 500 - 800 ml/m2.
Determine the exact amount of material required by coating a test area on site.

Application Conditions

Lower Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+5 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.

Drying/Drying Time

At 20 °C and 65 % relative humidity surface dry and recoatable after 12 hours. Cured and ready for stress after approx. 3 days. Lower temperatures and higher humidity extend the drying time.

Note

Do not mix with other materials to keep the product characteristics. To avoid lapping, the product should be applied wet-on-wet and without interruption. Due to the use of Caparol-Tiefgrund TB in interiors, a typical solvent odour is released, hence proper ventilation must be provided during application and drying. In sensitive areas use non-aromatic, low-odour AmphiSilan-Putzfestiger.
Touching up surfaces is depending on many parameters and may be visible after drying.
(In Germany: See BFS Data Sheet No. 25)

Please Note (Status as at Date of Publication)

Keep out of reach from children. Use P2 dust filter for grinding. Ensure good ventilation during use and drying. Do not eat, drink or smoke while using the product. In case of contact with eyes or skin, immediately and thoroughly rinse with water. Do not allow product to enter drains, waterways or soil. Clean utensils immediately after use with soap and water. Do not breathe spray dust.
