    Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be solid, sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.

Apply one suitable priming coat before filler/surfacer application, depending on substrate requirements. Follow Technical Information No. 650. Roughen the surface of glossy/shiny and stable existing coatings previously.

    Method of Application

Spray Application with Spatter/Splatter Effect (Mottled Aspect):
The use of high-performance spraying equipment is efficient for coating and spattering interior walls and ceilings in thin-layered plastering technique, when the filler is directly applied from the one-way container. Suitable e.g. for concrete prefab elements, smoothly formed surfaces of cast-in-situ concrete, AAC/cellular concrete, gypsum wallboards/plasterboards.

    Procedure:
Attach the spraying unit to the container via connection cock/element (available from Caparol) and corresponding connection hose. Apply undiluted Caparol Ratio-Spachtel liberally to the full surface and level without delay using a suitable stainless steel trowel (smoothing trowel).

Caparol Ratio-Spachtel can be sanded after drying, but the dried surface is also feltable (in pre-wetted condition).
Allow the levelled surface to dry thoroughly, then apply Caparol Ratio-Spachtel in spatter technique to obtain a fine, medium or coarse texture, as desired.
The spatter effect can be varied by the degree of dilution and selected nozzle size. Spatter technique is advisable for use on ceilings which would remain without any further coating.

Special Advice for Surface Smoothing and Spraying (Spatter Technique):
For coating large rooms the application should always start by spraying and smoothing the ceiling and the upper part of walls down to a height easily reached from the floor, before spraying and smoothing the lower part of walls.

When only ceilings are to be coated, it is advisable to spray the boundary area of the ceiling at first (do not spray in the direction of walls), followed by coating the surface.  Aftertreat all corners with a wet radiator brush (after smoothing, when the filler is slightly dry). Allow to dry a little, then remove slight blistering by repeated smoothing. Touch up remaining surface defects manually.

If rust leaves marks on the dried surface, the substrate must be insulated by stippling with suitable anticorrosive primer, e.g. Capalac AllGrund. On extremely smooth (planar) concrete ceilings, free of burrs and shrink holes (cavity-free), a covering coat can be applied in spatter technique without previous smoothing.

    Teamwork and Output:
A team consists of 2 to 3 hands: 1 workman for handling the spray gun, applying an even layer of product; 2 workmen for treating the surface with smoothing trowels to achieve an even layer thickness.

    Covering Fixtures:
For covering window and door openings the use of wooden framework, fitting exactly and covered with a plastic foil, is well-proven. Mask floors with strong covering material.

    Suitable Spraying Equipment:
Caparol Ratio-Spachtel is applicable, directly from the container, with render/plaster conveyer or high-performance airless equipment. The delivery rate is depending on the capacity of airless unit and has to be determined by the device manufacturer.
Remove all filters when airless guns are used.
    Nozzle size: 0.035” – 0.043”
    Pressure: Approx. 150 – 180 bar
Airless spray guns with a higher flow rate, as recommended by the manufacturer, can be used.
Provide for a minimum application temperature of +10 °C to avoid a limited filler flow due to viscosity fluctuation at low temperatures.

    Surface Coating System

    Subsequent Treatment:
When thoroughly cured, the smoothened surfaces can be coated without priming using suitable Caparol emulsion and latex paint or Capacryl acrylic enamel.

Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Haftgrund before applying plastic compounds or glass fibre or textile wallpapers.
Apply one  priming coat of Caparol-Putzgrund before applying synthetic resin (organic) plasters.
Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Haftgrund before applying interior paint Sylitol Bio-Innenfarbe.

    Consumption

    Spray Application:
Approx. 1,500 g/m2 per mm of coating thickness.

    Textured Spatter Effect:
Approx. 400 – 700 g/m2, depending on the desired texture.

    Application Conditions

Lower Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+5 °C for substrate and ambient air.
Temperature of product during application should be > + 10 °C.

    Drying/Drying Time

Approx. 12 - 48 hours, depending on building moisture, temperature and coating thickness.

    Note

Do not use Caparol Ratio-Spachtel in damp locations/moist rooms. Slight colour deviation may occur due to the use of natural fillers. It is advisable to use product of same batch for filling and spattering, when spattered surfaces remain without any coat of paint.

Abrasion may occur, especially with the use of new conveyor equipment and feed hoses. Please follow the manufacturer’s instruction for plaster conveyor equipment.

For spray application on wall areas in spatter technique, recoating with Caparol emulsion paint is advisable to obtain a higher resistance.

Fine blistering may appear on compact, low absorbent substrates. This can be removed by repeated smoothing after having allowed to flash off for a short time. The proper timing for re-smoothing depends on temperature and air moisture on site. When fine air pockets recur, even after re-smoothing, the smoothing process which obviously had been made too early must be repeated.

On roughly textured substrates an additional smoothing process may be necessary.

Reworking gypsum filling compounds may lead to swelling, blistering and flaking due to long lasting moisture exposure. Provide for quick drying by sufficient ventilation and temperature. In Germany: Follow Data Sheet No. 2 "Verspachtelung von Gipsplatten" (Trowel Application on Plasterboards) issued by the German Association of Gypsum and Plasterboard Industry.
