Yes, they have short legs and some unlovingly call them 'foot horns'. But the quite clever little animal does not deserve that its name is used as a swearword, as is customary in Swabia. There are pretty good reasons why Waldi (the name of the dachshund mascot of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich) is the perfect companion for humans. It stands as a synonym for loyalty, self-confident, stubborn and tough. It's better than any alarm system.

It is small, but has tremendous courage. It is not for nothing that people say: "When the dachshund looks into a mirror, it sees a lion." And it's versatile. Speaking of which, did you know that in the US, people celebrate the Dress-your-pet Day in January? Crazy, isn't it? Well, the dachshund is 'in vogue'. And to be honest, who can resist the sweet dachshund look?

…THAT THE DACHSHUND, WHEN IT LOOKS IN THE MIRROR, SEES A LION?

It is in its nature: dachshunds are stubborn, idiosyncratic and self-confident. Without fear, the cute little fellows stand up bravely and cheekily even against bigger opponents. It is not for nothing that dachshunds are just as loyal as successful companions when hunting.1

…THAT THE FIRST FASHION DOG WAS A DACHSHUND?

Wilhelm II already had a dachshund and made it a status symbol for the bourgeoisie. The phenomenon of the fashion dog was born and at the same time the first of three dachshund phases. The second one appeared in the 1970s, currently we are falling in love with dachshunds for the third time.2

Due to the elongated back, Americans in particular see the dachshund as a sausage on four legs. Derived from the wiener sausage they call it "wiener dog" or "sausage dog".3

“Posh Teckel” is the name of the dachshund pub in Berlin-Neukölln, where young, hip dachshund lovers meet, exchange ideas and walk their dogs together.4

…THAT THE DACHSHUND IS THE SMALLEST HUNTING DOG?

Due to its low height it is used for hunting badgers and foxes, because it can crawl into the narrow animal burrows. Therefore, the name "dachshund" (Dachs is German for badger) is common, particularly in English-speaking countries.1

…THAT THE DACHSHUND WAS THE MASCOT OF THE 20TH OLYMPIC GAMES IN 1972?

"Waldi" was the name of the colourful striped dachshund and was meant to symbolise endurance, toughness and - despite its short legs - mobility. It was available as a cuddly toy and plastic figure, as a badge and wine gums.5

The perfect (hunting/) city dog is small and practical. Perhaps this is one reason why the dachshund made it into the world of celebrities. Heidi Klum with her Victor or singer Adele with dachshund Loui. But also artists like Picasso, scientists like Albert Einstein, as well as members of royal families like Queen Elizabeth II of England have succumbed to the dachshund eyes.1
