Suitable Substrates
The substrates must be sound/stable, dry, clean and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.
Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars):
Prime highly porous, sanding, absorbent substrates with OptiGrund or CapaSol, then apply one priming coat of Capadecor DecoGrund or Caparol-Haftgrund.
Gypsum Plasters and Ready-Mixed Gypsum Plasters (Mortar Classes PIV, PV):
Sand/grind off sintered skin and remove all abrasive dust. Apply one priming coat of Capadecor DecoGrund or Caparol-Haftgrund.
Gypsum Wallboards:
Prime absorbent boards with OptiGrund E.L.F. or Caparol-Tiefgrund TB, then apply one priming coat of Capadecor DecoGrund or Caparol-Haftgrund.
Gypsum Plasterboards (Sandwich-Type Plaster Boards / Drywalls):
Sand/grind off any filling (mortar) burrs and remove all abrasive dust. Prime with Capadecor DecoGrund or Caparol-Haftgrund. Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Filtergrund coarse on boards with content of water-soluble, discolouring substances that leave marks. In Germany: Follow BFS Data Sheet No. 12, part 2.
Concrete:
Remove all releasing agent (formwork oil residues) and chalking, sanding substances. Apply one priming coat of Capadecor DecoGrund or Caparol-Haftgrund.
Fill all pores and shrinkage holes before coating with MultiStruktur.
Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) / Cellular Concrete:
Prime with a 1 : 3 mixture of Capaplex and tap (potable) water. Smoothing is effected with Caparol-Akkordspachtel.
Hardboards/Fibreboards, Flakeboards (Chipboards/Particle Boards), Plywood Boards/Panels:
These substrates are not or only limited suitable for being coated with MultiStruktur. Check previously for compatibility by trials (coating a test area on site). Butt joints can remain visibly even after being coated with MultiStruktur (hair-line cracks/fissures).
Stable Coatings:
Treat matt, slightly absorbent coatings without a preliminary preparation. Roughen/sand glossy surfaces and enamel coatings, then apply an adhesion promoting priming coat of, e.g. Capacryl Haftprimer, Capadecor DecoGrund or Caparol-Haftgrund.
Unstable Existing Coatings:
Carefully remove unstable coatings of enamel, dispersion/emulsion paint or synthetic (organic) plaster. Apply one priming coat of OptiGrund or CapaSol on highly porous, sanding or absorbent surfaces. Remove unstable coats of mineral paint by mechanical means and remove all dust. Prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB, then apply one priming coat of Capadecor DecoGrund or Caparol-Haftgrund.
Glue-Bound Distemper (Limewater Colour/Paint):
Completely wash off, allow to fully dry and apply one priming coat of Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.
Wallpapers:
Remove wallpapers completely and wash off all residues of wallpaper paste/glue and waste paper. Prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB, then apply one priming coat of Capadecor DecoGrund or Caparol-Haftgrund.
Mildewed Surfaces:
Remove fungal attack (fungi/mildew/mould) by wet cleaning/scrubbing, then use Capatox or FungiGrund and allow to dry thoroughly. Prime according to the type and condition of the substrate, in compliance with legal/local and official regulations (follow e.g. Ordinance on Biological Agents and Ordinance on Hazardous Substances).
Surfaces Stained by Nicotine, Water, Soot or Fat/Grease:
Remove nicotine, soot or fat/grease stains by washing with tap water adding a fat-dissolving household detergent, then allow the substrate to dry thoroughly. Clean dried-up water stains by dry brushing-off. Apply an insulating coat of Caparol-Filtergrund coarse (Technical Information No. 845).Small Defects:
After having completed the necessary preparations, repair with filler Caparol-Akkordspachtel in accordance with our processing specification, and if necessary, prime subsequently.
Method of Application
Stir MultiStruktur thoroughly before use (manually or with a slow-turning agitator) and apply the product undiluted with paint brush or roller.
Application of Product
Roller Application:
Use medium pile type rollers (pile height: 14 - 18 mm) for each graining to achieve an even application of product.
Dilute MultiStruktur Fine approx. 5 to 10 % with tap water. Apply liberally and spread cross-wise, to obtain an even surface. Then texture the surface with suitable tool.
Trowel Application:
MultiStruktur types Fine may also be trowel applied, directly from the container, and then textured.
Spray Application:
All MultiStruktur types may be applied with spraying equipment using screw conveyor or (for small surfaces) hopper gun.
Nozzle size: 4 - 6 mm, spray pressure: 2.0 - 2.5 bar.
Texturing:
MultiStruktur is easily and individually texturable, depending on the desired visual effect. Particularly suitable are trowels, soft or hard brushes, texturing rollers, leather clothes, etc.
Further Treatment or Renovation:
MultiStruktur is recoatable with DecoLasur Matt/Gloss, ArteLasur, Metallocryl Interior or CapaGold/CapaSilver.
The hydrophobic surface of MultiStruktur is favoured for large surfaces before a further treatment with other paint materials to avoid lapping. The final hydrophobic effect is reached after approx. 2 to 3 days.
Surface Coating System
Apply minimum one coat of Capadecor DecoGrund, Caparol-Haftgrund or Putzgrund 610 on suitable substrates before applying MultiStruktur.Exceptions may be stable/adherent, absorbent existing coats of paint, when positively tested for compatibility (tensile bond test on site).
For pigmented coats of MultiStruktur, the priming coat should already be tinted to match the finishing coat in shade.
Consumption
Consumption may vary depending on the applied coating thickness, used application technique and tools, and the desired visual appearance of the surface to be coated.Fine graining: Approx. 500 - 700 g/m2
Medium graining: Approx. 500 - 600 g/m2
Coarse graining: Approx. 600-700 g/m2
Screw feeder/conveyor pump: Approx. 500 - 1,000 g/m2
Determine the exact amount of material required by coating a test area on site.
Application Conditions
Minimum Temperature for Application and Drying:+5 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.
Drying/Drying Time
At 20 °C and 65 % of relative humidity surface-dry after approx. 6 to 8 hours. Thoroughly dry and ready for stress (loadable) after approx. 1 to 2 days.Lower temperatures and/or higher relative humidity extend the drying time.
Tool Cleaning
Clean tools/equipment immediately after use with water.Note
Being natural products, the quartz granules (natural sand) used for filling Capadecor MultiStruktur may cause slight colour variations. Only MultiStruktur buckets marked with identical batch numbers should be used or, if using different batches, always mix the entire quantity needed in advance.
To avoid lapping, care should be taken to apply the product wet-on-wet without interruption.
Due to the use of Caparol-Tiefgrund TB in interiors, a typical solvent odour is released, hence proper ventilation must be provided during application and drying. Use non-aromatic, low odour AmphiSilan-Putzfestiger in sensitive areas.
Reworking gypsum filling compounds may cause swelling, blistering and flaking due to long lasting moisture exposure. Hence provide for quick drying by means of sufficient ventilation and temperature.
In Germany: Follow Data Sheet No. 2 "Verspachtelung von Gipsplatten / Trowel Application on Plasterboards" issued by German Association of Gypsum and Plasterboard Industry.
Please Note (Status as at Date of Publication)
