Suitable Substrates
Surfaces of melamine resin materials, rigid/unplasticized PVC, powder-coatings✱, sound/stable existing 2-component coatings, iron, steel, aluminium (not anodized), zinc plates, hot-dip galvanized steel and many other substrates after being tested for sufficient adhesion.
✱ Due to the numerous different powder-coatings a test for sufficient adhesion is generally recommended.
Substrate Preparation
The substrate must be stable/sound, dry, clean, solid and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion.
Melamine Resin Surfaces:
Roughen/sand the surface slightly and remove abrasive dust.
Wooden Parts:
Sand the surface in fibre direction, clean thoroughly, remove exuding wood extractives, e.g. wood resin/rosin and resin galls, cut sharp edges (see BFS Data Sheet No. 18).
Rigid/Unplasticized PVC:
Wash with ammoniacal wetting agent as per BFS Data Sheet No. 22.
Powder-Coatings:
Roughen the surface and clean thoroughly, using fine abrasive papers as per BFS Data Sheet No. 24.
Zinc Plates and Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel:
Wash with ammoniacal wetting agent or sweep blasting as per BFS Data Sheet No. 5.
Aluminium:
Sand/grind with an abrasive fabric and clean with a diluent for cellulose lacquers or phosphoric-acidic cleaning as per BFS Data Sheet No. 6.
Iron, Steel:
Derust by blasting according to industry standard SA 2½, as per DIN EN ISO 12 944 Part 4.
Mixing Ratio
Base : hardener = 9 : 1 parts by weightMethod of Application
Capalac 2K-EP-Haftgrund can be applied by brush, roller or spraying equipment. Add the hardener to the base material and stir intensively by hand or with a low-speed electrical paddle (max. 400 rpm). Then pour the material in another container and mix again, until a homogenous streak-free shade, is achieved. Temperature of both components should be 15 - 20 °C.
Do not dilute the material for roller or brush application. Adjust to spraying consistency using thinner Disboxid 419, if necessary. The subsequent coatings must be applied after a drying time of min. 16 hours to max. 24 hours, to avoid diminished adhesion. After a waiting time of more than 24 hours: The surface of Capalac 2K-EP-Haftgrund must be slightly roughened (sanded).
How to Activate the Spray/Aerosol Can:
Shake the can intensively for min. 2 minutes before use. The metal balls inside the can must be hearable. Remove the protecting cap from the can's base. Use the inserted curl/ring to pull out the pin to the stop. Turn around the ring (360°) to set the hardener free. Then shake the can very intensively to ensure a homogeneous mixture of hardener and base material.
Spraying distance to the surface of components parts should be between 20 - 30 cm.
Always spray thin, even cross coats (cross spraying). The following coatings must be applied after a drying time of min. 16 to max. 24 hours, to avoid diminished adhesion.
After a waiting time of more than 24 hours: The surface of Capalac 2K-EP-Haftgrund must be slightly roughened (sanded).

Consumption
Approx. 120 - 170 g/m2.Consumption is approx. 30 % higher for spray application.
Spreading rate of spray/aerosol can: Approx. 1.5 m2 per can.
Consumption is a reference value and may vary, depending on the substrate's condition, applied coating thickness and spraying distance.
Workability
(Pot Life/Potlife/Can-Time)- Combi-Packaging:
Approx. 8 hours at 20 °C. Higher temperatures shorten, lower temperatures extend the pot life. - Spray Can:
Approx. 2 days at 20 °C. Higher temperatures shorten, lower temperatures extend the can-time.
Application Conditions
Material, Ambient and Substrate Temperature:Min. 8 °C, max. 30 °C during application and drying. Relative humidity must not exceed 80 %. Substrate temperature should always be min. 3 °C above the dew point temperature.
Drying/Drying Time
Dust dry: After approx. 40 minutes. (Spray/aerosol can: 10 minutes)Recoatable: After 16 hours at the earliest, but within max. 24 hours, either with the same material or with finishing enamels. When exceeding the time limit the surface must always be roughened (sanded/grinded) to ensure proper adhesion of the following coat.
Reference values at 20 °C and 65 % relative humidity.
Higher temperatures, e.g. caused by direct sunlight, will significantly shorten the curing time. If so, the finishing/top coat must be applied correspondingly earlier or the priming coat has to be prepared by roughening (sanding/grinding).
