Suitable Substrates
The substrate must be sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18363, section 3.Substrate Preparation
Solid, slightly absorbent substrates or sound/stable, matt existing paint coatings can be coated without any preliminary treatment. Prime sanding, highly absorbent substrates or soft, sanded gypsum plasters with Caparol OptiSilan TiefGrund.
Surfaces Stained with Nicotine or Soot:
Wash off nicotine or soot deposits and coat the surface without additional pre-treatment.
Dried-Up Water Stains:
In individual cases the insulating effect of Aqua-inn № 1 may be insufficient. For such problematic cases a trial application is essential and, if necessary, apply an additional suppressing coat of Caparol AquaSperrgrund, Capalac Isolierspray or Capacryl Holz-Isogrund. Clean dried-up water stains by dry scrubbing.
Lignin Discolouration on Gypsum Plasterboards:
Surfaces can be coated without additional pre-treatment.
Sound-Absorbing Covering Ceilings and Sound-Control Plasters:
The restoration of sound-absorbing systems requires a special approach. Detailed instructions are provided in the Caparol manual for spraying technoloy. The manual can be orderd via Caparol. Please ask for advice, if necessary.
Revision:
In order to maintain the barrier effect during renovation, either an intermediate coat of AquaSperrgrund or a further coat of Aqua-inn Nº1 is required. For subsequent wallpapering, apply an intermediate coat of Caparol Haftgrund EG or Caparol AquaSperrgrund.
Small Defects:
When using gypsum-based, hydraulically setting fillers in quality level Q2/Q3, a transparent, water-based primer is recommended. Please refer to the Maler&Lackierer Merkblatt No. 2 -9/2020 "Haftfestigkeitsstörungen von Beschichtungen auf verspachtelten Gips(karton)platten" des Bundesverbandes Farbe, Gestaltung, Bautenschutz und des Bundesausschusses Farbe und Sachwertschutz. As an alternative to the gypsum-based Q3 levelling compound, levelling with pasty levelling compounds has proven itself.

Spraying acoustic systems
Acoustic systems such as acoustic plasters and acoustic ceiling tiles can be refurbished if the following processing criteria are met. The acoustic effectiveness of the systems is generally not noticeably impaired after initial refurbishment.
Coating application:
When coating porous acoustic systems, care must be taken to ensure that the pore structure of the surface is not sealed by the paint application. The surfaces may only be fogged. This ensures that the individual colour particles remain on the surface and do not run into a closed film. It is important that the paint is atomised finely and evenly.
Note:
- The addition of 30% water to the coating changes the product properties in accordance with DIN EN 13300, such as gloss, wet abrasion and opacity, as well as the insulating properties of Aqua-inn N°1.
- The finer the surface of an acoustic system to be reworked, the greater the change in acoustic effectiveness after reworking.
- For discolouration caused by ingredients, alkalinity, moisture and uneven absorption behaviour in the substrate, no guarantee can be given for colour accuracy or a visually perfect surface.
- Discolouration caused by different thermal conductivity of different building materials or condensation moisture on the surface must be attributed to the physical conditions of the building.
Preparation:
- The substrate must be vacuumed with an industrial vacuum cleaner and cleaned if necessary.
- The colour of the coating must be matched to the colour of the substrate. The colour contrast between the substrate and the coating material used should be as low as possible.
- Masking measures should be carried out in accordance with a spray application.
Coating:
- Penetrating discolouration, e.g. dry water stains, should be partially pre-treated with a blocking primer. Capalac Isolating Spray is suitable for this purpose.
- Isolated high-contrast stains should be pre-misted before coating in order to achieve better coverage of these areas.
- If the coverage is insufficient, a second coat of paint can be applied, but it is better to apply two thin coats than one thick coat.
- The material consumption (thinned material) should not exceed 80 ml/m2 per coat. Higher material consumption increases the risk of acoustic deterioration.
- Coating is carried out with Aqua-inn Nº1 or CapaSilan depending on the type of soiling present.

Please note: The exact device settings (air pressure and material supply) should be tested on sample surfaces before starting work and readjusted if necessary. The material must be thinned and sieved before application. The applied coating should never be rolled on or smoothed with a brush. The sealing effect of Aqua-inn Nº1 is only limited due to the low layer thickness with this application method. To ensure exact material consumption, we recommend practising the application method on sample panels with the appropriate amount of material. When using devices with a suction nozzle, the paint can be drawn directly from a container placed on a digital scale with grammes. This allows the user to check the exact consumption during application. The maximum material consumption is 130 g/m2 per application (diluted material). Clean the equipment with water immediately after use. If work is interrupted, leave the appliance in the paint, cover the container with foil, for example, and keep the gun and nozzle under water.
A copy of the test report for determining the sound absorption coefficient αs in the reverberation chamber in accordance with DIN EN 20 354 can be provided on request.
Surface Coating System
A rich, even coat of Aqua-inn Nº1, undiluted.
On high-contrast substrates and surfaces with heavy soiling, apply a previous primer or intermediate coat diluted with max. 5 % water.
On differently absorbent surfaces, apply a priming coat of AquaSperrgrund or Caparol-Haftgrund EG.
Consumption
Approx. 150 ml/m2 per coat on smooth substrates. On roughly textured surfaces correspondingly more. Determine the exact amount of material required by coating a test area on site.Application Conditions
Lower Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+ 5 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.
Lower temperature limit to achieve an optimal insulating effect: +16 °C.
Drying/Drying Time
At +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity: surface-dry after 4-6 hours and recoatable after 12 hours. Completely dry and ready for stress after 3 days. Lower temperatures and higher humidity extend the drying time.Note
Apply wet-on-wet without interruption to avoid lapping. Many types of impurities can be dissolved in a particular substrate, hence previously applied trials are recommended before applying paint coatings on contaminated surfaces.
Do not use Aqua-inn № 1 on surfaces exposed to moisture or water vapour (damp locations).
For airless spraying, stir the paint well and sieve. In order to detect any tinting errors, please check the colour accuracy before application. On contiguous surfaces, only use colour shades from one production batch.
Compatibility:
Aqua-inn Nº1 cannot be mixed with other materials.
